• IrfanView-changes cursor

    Hi All,

I am using IrfanView 3.90 as a photo viewer (rather than using the associated program for photos, which is Photoshop). That is, if I just want to view 1 photo (eg, jpeg) and don’t want to open Photoshop to work on it, which would take too long, I drag the file over to my IrfanView icon on the desktop.

If I do this often enough (read that as only 2-3 times) within a Windows session, my Normal Select pointer (arrow pointing at 11AM) gets changed to a Move pointer (horizontal and vertical double headed arrows). Restarting windows XP will cure things.

Any clues on why? I also have IrfanView on my Send To menu – would using this solve/avoid the problem? I like IrfanView a lot, like many loungers, but the changing of the pointers drives me crazy

    TIA

      Hi Fred

Just tried to repeat this on my Win98 box, and the cursor keeps behaving itself ad nauseum. Can you get it to revert back to what it should be, by using some totally different application – like selecting some text in Notepad, for instance?

        Alan, BigAl,

        Thanks for the ideas.

Now, of course, I can’t get it to misbehave. I’ve just tried dragging over a dozen jpegs onto the IrfanView icon. Always comes back ok. Then I logged onto the Internet and tried dragging a few more pics – still ok. Other than that, there are no other networks.

Next time this happens, I’ll try your suggestions.

Used IView for more years than I care to remember, in Win3/Win95/Win98/WinNT/Win2000/WinXP but I’ve never seen the prob I’m sorry. It’s nothing short of excellent.

I was just wondering why you drag the .jpg to the iview icon – much easier, surely, just to double-click the .jpg (assuming you’ve got iview set as your default) Double-click’s quicker (usually) and (hopefully) wouldn’t give you the prob ? I also use Photoshop, P/shop elements, and others but I keep iview as default for double-click, and if I want to edit I right click and “open with”

            Bryan,

No go. On this computer, Photoshop is the default for just about any graphic file, especially the “generic” ones like jpeg (it’s actually my wife’s computer and I don’t think she’d like me playing with that). Another thing I’ve done which actually works out a little better is to add IView to my Send To menu. Haven’t seen a recurrence of the problem with either dragging or Sending To since I reported it. Go figure.

            Thks

            Fred

In Irfanview go to Tool | Set file associations and you get to choose the file types for which Irfanview will be the default.

              Joe,

Did I miss something in the Tool | Set feature? I didn’t try it bcs I’m assuming it will make a change to the Windows Registry so IView is the program used to open whatever extension is chosen in IView. I don’t want to make any such global changes since my wife doesn’t use IView. She uses things like PhotoShop and Corel Draw and those are set to be the pgm to open for all types of graphic files.

              Hi Fred

I use a similar Send To -> arrangement to you. But there’s also another free context menu enhancement, IrfanView ShellExtension, that might be of interest (near bottom of page).

This doesn’t actually open your image, but does provide some other potentially useful functionality.

              Hi Alan,

Thks for the info on the extension. I hadn’t noticed that when I initially downloaded IView. There were other good things on the site that I downloaded also.

My wife, who has the graphics gene in the family, pointed out a shortcoming of the extension. She was impressed when the IView extension instantly converted a jpeg to a tif. But when we did the reverse conversion, she objected to the automatic nature of it. When converting to a jpeg, she wanted to be able to control the compression amount, which we could NOT do.

              Hi Fred

This is actually a separate utility, offered by a company completely independent of IView – that’s why there’s no reference to it on the IView site. And yes, changing the file associations in IView will cause these types to open by default in IView – a result that you don’t want.

I have but don’t use Irfanview fellas, so I’ve not seen the behaviour there. I do however, occasionally see that double-headed arrow symptom once in awhile and it usually happens when I click some task and WinXP is busy for a second or two or three. If I move my mouse down over the task bar, I’ll see that double-headed arrow but it always goes away in a few seconds, i.e. changes back to the normal pointer.

Could Irfanview be doing something that’s “tying up” the processor, like looking for files on a network connection or something of that sort? Would Task Manager or some other “process watcher” tell you anything about what’s going on? See if Irfanview is chewing up CPU time/cycles…
