MemberNovember 8, 2021 at 4:36 pm #2400548I appreciate the publication of this informative article on the latest developments of the Apple new SoC processors, three types of these already out, by my own count. The author makes a big emphasis on the integrated shared-memory of CPU and GPU, that is fine for image rendering, but leaves out what seems to me is a pretty innovative and promising development: Part of the SoC includes a neural network engine that, besides helping carry out tasks such as finger print or face recognition, I suspect that is going to make possible the development of useful applications for many scientific and engineering fields where Macs already play a very important role.
And, to me at least, not everything is crystal-clear reading the article. Take this for example:
“Previously, critics complained that Apple compared M1 performance to that of unknown PCs. This time, Apple specifically identified the compared systems. Discrete PC laptop graphics were tested with a Lenovo Legion 5 (82JW0012US); the high-end discrete PC laptop graphics performance data came from tests on an MSI GE76 Raider (11UH-053); and the PC compact pro laptop tests were from a Razer Blade 15 Advanced (RZ09-0409CE53-R3U1).”
OK, but why Apple, when comparing performance with those of (I assume to be) top-of-the-line Intel-processor models of other brands (e.g., the Lenovo one) does not also compare the performance of the new M1 Macs to those of the Intel Macs, including the newest ones, with the latest-generation, 8-core Intel CPU that came out quite recently, when the new “Silicon” Macs with the M1 SoC were already being sold? I think that such comparison could be quite interesting.
Ex-Windows user (Win. 98, XP, 7); since mid-2017 using also macOS. Presently on Monterey 12.15 & sometimes running also Linux (Mint).
MacBook Pro circa mid-2015, 15" display, with 16GB 1600 GHz DDR3 RAM, 1 TB SSD, a Haswell architecture Intel CPU with 4 Cores and 8 Threads model i7-4870HQ @ 2.50GHz.
Intel Iris Pro GPU with Built-in Bus, VRAM 1.5 GB, Display 2880 x 1800 Retina, 24-Bit color.
macOS Monterey; browsers: Waterfox "Current", Vivaldi and (now and then) Chrome; security apps. Intego AVWebpp

Depending on your needs. For simple home usage it is enough. For more demanding usage like Video editing… 32GB or more is recommended.
