Is this the sequence to install XP virtual?

I won’t go into the details of the kerfuffle surrounding my recent attempt to re-install XP virtual on my W7 Pro 36 bit Asus PC. I have sussefully re-installed it several times since 8-2012 with no problems. Maybe you guys can help as you’ve done before. I appreciate all your prior help.

These are the files I downloaded:
[INDENT]1) VALIDATOR: GenuineCheck.exe
2) XP SOFTWARE: WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe
3) VIRTUAL MACHINE: Windows6.1-KB958559-x86-RefreshPkg.ms[/INDENT]

These are the steps I took to install XP Virtual:

[INDENT]A) Go to the Windows XP Mode (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8002) webpage, select your language, and click on the Continue button
Select your language, and click on the Download button for the version (ex: WINDOWSXPMODE_EN-US.EXE, ) you want to download.

XP software installation:
Download the Windows XP Mode installer.
Double click on the installer and follow the instructions to complete the installation.

[INDENT]Note:
We recommend that you save a copy of the Windows XP Mode installer for future, to restore the Windows XP Mode environment. For example, you could burn the installer to DVD or save it to a backup media. If the files installed by Windows XP Mode gets corrupted or deleted, you will get an error while trying to start Windows XP Mode. You can then try reinstalling the Windows XP Mode using the installer that you have saved.

B) Download and Install Windows Virtual PC At the Windows Virtual PC webpage (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3702), select your language, and
click on the Continue button. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3702

C) Select your language, and click on the Download button for either the WINDOWS6.1-KB958559-X86-REFRESHPKG.MSU (32-BIT)
or WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu (64-bit) file for your same 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7 version you have installed.

Virtual Machine PC installation:Upgrade from Windows Virtual PC Beta to Windows
Virtual PC RC is not supported. Click here for more information.Based on the architecture (32-bit or 64-bit) of your computer, download the appropriate update package (Windows6.1-KB958559-x86.msu or Windows6.1-KB958559-x64.msu).Double click on the update package (Windows6.1-KB958559-x86.msu or Windows6.1-KB958559-x64.msu) and follow the instructions. Reboot your system to complete installation.[/INDENT]

Below is the ERROR I got after XP Virt after a re-boot of XP virtual that was up & running.

Have you created a VM and set it up to install the OS in? Or are you trying to dual boot with windows xp?

Thanks for the quick reply.

I don’t use dual boot. I boot to W7 for most work, but if I need to run my older XP program, I just click the XP Virt Icon on my desktop
or task bar and I’m ready to go. I like the K.I.S.S method, because my business is diverse and fast moving.

I have W7 Pro 32 bit and I’m using MS’s XP Virt machine that comes with W7 Pro. MS’s XP Virt machine has generally worked fine for my usage even though I had to re-install it twice in 1 1/2 yr. Those installations took 10-15 min. However; since then I think MS changed the web pages or process on download-installing it.

I’m not a techie and only use XP Virt on occasion to run an older program in it. I only use the MS Virt machine to run XP because its comes with W7 Pro and I don’t know what or how I need to do to use another VM program. And the MS Virt is free.

If you guys give some help, I’m willing to try one of Lifehackers VM’s

Below are the 3 pcs of SW I downloaded from MS for their Virt Machine, looks like I’ll only be using #’s 1 & 2.

So if you want to try to help or at least get me started, maybe an overview of the steps would be a good place to start, Meanwhile I’ll study Lifehacker’s VMs as suggested.

I dunno maybe some security feature didn’t allow the dll to be put in the System32 folder?

If you wan’t to avoid so many installations get it going once and use VMWare Player 3.0 to import XP Mode, update VMWare Player to the latest, make a copy of the VM as backup, never bother Microsoft download servers again. I think VMWare has more features and is more stable to boot and since it’s been untied from the current install, copies of it can travel anywhere and run on anything compatible.

From a clean PC, I followed the steps at Ms to no avail. These images should tell you the story as I have gotten the same reslts several tims in the last wk trying to re-install XP virt:

Must be something else going on however; my W7 portion is running fine.

Are you executing the installers with “run as administrator”?

Yes, I set my W7 to automatically allow me adm perm.

Tried it a few times with different settings (run as admin, etc.), no go. Since it was right at the end I figured it must all be there or maybe I only need the XP Mode files for VMWare player, so, installed 3.0, imported XP Mode, started, configured, tools updated, VMWare Player updated, tools further updated, ran, all but useless IE6 hidden, Chrome installed, onward and upward. Need a copy? Let me know. :p Otherwise if you are still stalled out, I would get a copy of 3.0x VMWare Player and see if it can import the already installed XPMode. If it does, you’re in business without the Microsoft travails.

Took your advice, downloaded>installed VMW player. Downloaded manual, 88 pages of info I don’t understand. Started installing it, (after viewing your inst in red above) Didn’t get very far, see screen shots. The screen shots a a little out of order, tried to re-order to no avail.
512 was default mem, changed to 1024, however, the last screen, hdwe. option, did not list any of the 4-5 partitions on my HD. I installed the VM ware program on my partition which is 100 gb. Never got to the import XP step.
Is this the XP program file that needs to be imported: WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe

Please help with my next step(s)?

Step 6 you are following from that link? In 3.0x there should be a File>>Import Windows XP Mode entry that I don’t see. If you are successful good but in the meantime I will try it on another spare Windows 7 system (32-bit?) and skip installing VirtualPC update, yet still see if XP Mode en will install and be imported. If not, then again with the full 32 MB VirtualPC installation program installed, not one of the Windows update versions. I will take screenshots and post if successful.

Just to clarify though, the entire reason for using VMWare Player 3.0x is that it contains that Import XP Mode command in the menu listing which was removed from later versions at the request of Microsoft I am pretty sure. You can change any VM settings like increasing RAM allocation later after it has been successfully imported.

I saw the post but that is too far into the process, first thing as soon as VMWare Player is started is to import XP Mode. I had great success without installing Virtual PC at all, just installing XP Mode and importing. Have been busy working thru your suggestions, Thanks to you I got XP virtual up & running using the built in MS virtual machine. Also have VM ware player installed but not using til I have other problems worked out.

Using the W7 built in Virt Mach, I tried to increase the working memory foem 512 mb to 1024 mg. Ran into a problem? Cant change the settings menu as its grayed out??? Other than that, it’s running OK. Do you think I should start using VM Virtual instead on W7 built in VM? Assuming I don’t run into more problems with the VM virtual.

Try shutting down XP mode. You can’t change the RAM with the VM running (hibernated is not shut down).

Yes, if Joe’s suggestion does not work I do not know what will. As far as what to run it in, you can decide. I prefer VMWare Player because it is so easy to move the VM then from C drive to any other drive internal or external where performance is usually better and it is so easy to back up by just making a copy of the VMWare Player virtual machine folder.

If you choose the later then the Windows XP Mode base.vhd (1.12 gig) file in Windows XP Mode folder in Program Files should be copied to the place where VMWare Player imported XP Mode to, which is normally in your Documents folder in the My Virtual Machines folder. Then it is only necessary to have that folder to run XP Mode in VMWare Player, if one wishes, XP Mode and VirtualPC can be uninstalled from Programs and Features without affecting the My Virtual Machines folder. That’s is what I have done so long ago so I can take the virtual machine from host to host on a USB 3.0 external drive and run it anywhere as long as VMWare Player is installed on the new host.

Thanks for all your help, but something else must be wrong. Have repeatedly deep scanned myW7 PC SUPERANTISPYWARE, MALWAREBYTES, DEFENDER, PANDA CLOUD ANTI VIRUS, along with CCLEANER for cleanup & AUSLOGIC DISK DEFRAG.

I have used this process for over 25 yr of PC use and it’s worked.

SO I’m putting XP virtual to rest and will start over from scratch when I unwind myself. :][]

I got XP virt running in the MS virtual machine like I’ve had for the last 1 1/2 yr. Thanks to you guys .

Below is a screen shot of my current XP mode set-up values. Please take a look-see if:

2) Are there any I can change to improve it’s operation?
3) Am I running 2 XP virt simultaneously, Can I delete it?, Ignore it?[/INDENT]

The settings for the VM seem OK. I’m not sure how or why you’d have two identically named .vmcx files.
