• Is use of 2 different browsers together possible?

Just wondering if it is possible to use IE 11 and Chrome at the same time on one machine? We have been running IE 11 on both of our computers, but it will not open or will not completely open HTML 5 games on the Pogo web site. I had our computer guy change it over to Chrome. (Learning experience for both of us.) Now Chrome will not open any of the Java based games. Is it possible to run both together, or is this a can of worms to avoid?

Both machines are running Win 7 x64 SP 1.

I suspect your problem relates to Chrome not running Java for the last 3 or so years:

      Java and Google Chrome Browser
      This article applies to:

      Browser(s) Chrome
      Java version(s): 7.0, 8.0

Chrome no longer supports NPAPI (technology required for Java applets)

The Java plug-in for web browsers relies on the cross platform plugin architecture NPAPI, which has been supported by all major web browsers for over a decade. Google’s Chrome version 45 (scheduled for release in September 2015) drops support for NPAPI, impacting plugins for Silverlight, Java, Facebook Video and other similar NPAPI based plugins.

Java applications are offered through web browsers as either a web start application (which do not interact with the browser once they are launched) or as a Java applet (which might interact with the browser). This change does not affect Web Start applications, it only impacts applets.

If you have problems accessing Java applications using Chrome, Oracle recommends using Internet Explorer (Windows) or Safari (Mac OS X) instead.

You will struggle to convince Chrome to run those Java-based games, no matter how hard you try, sorry Dave.

      kirsty,

I realize that. I am just wondering if BOTH IE11 and Chrome can be running on the same machine at the same time? Wife likes to switch between some Java games and some HTML5 games and wants it to go quick and smooth.

You can run as many different browsers as you can find to install, as long as they all use separate profiles, which all the browsers I am aware of do.

In terms of IE and Chrome, you can run them both at the same time if you wish.  You could add Firefox, Waterfox, Vivaldi, Opera, etc. if you wanted to as well.

Waterfox may work for your Java games, as long as they will work with the 64-bit Java plugin, since Waterfox still supports NPAPI plugins. Waterfox only comes in 64-bit, and it thus has to use the 64-bit Java plugin.  I found the 64 bit Java plugin would not work with my bank’s check deposit via scanner Java applet… so now I use the last 32-bit Firefox ESR build (I forget the number) to use the Java applet within my Windows VM (the scanner applet also requires Windows… so much for the vaunted cross-platform nature of Java!).  That browser is not used for anything other than connecting to that bank, so I am not concerned about malware infecting an unsupported browser or exploiting the Swiss cheese security of Java.   All my other banks are handled natively from Waterfox (with NoScript) within Linux, outside of the VM.

It’s kind of funny that the very same bank site complains that I am using an unsupported, old browser, which I am only using to support their own site’s Java applet.  Fortunately (unlike Chase), it’s just a warning, not an outright prohibition (apparently, Chase never got the memo that browser useragent sniffing is bad practice).  It’s easy enough to spoof the useragent, but it should not be necessary in 2018.  It’s been known that useragent sniffing is bad practice for at least a decade.

I’m writing this post from Chrome on a machine that is using IE11 all the time. And a bit of Edge as well. No issues with that, although I don’t play any Web games.

At home, I use Firefox and Edge occasionally – also no issues at all.

Well, I can run IE 11 and Firefox Quantum at the same time on my 32-bit Win 7 Home PC, and without hiccup, although I only use IE when the devil drives.

OK, I tried running BOTH IE11 and Chrome at the same time to access different web sites, AND different web sites at the same time. SO FAR, seems to be OK. Now to convince Better Half that it CAN and DOES work OK. (Lots of luck with that ! ! ! )

Thanks for all the help and comments about this problem.

Update. I’ve been using IE11 and Chrome together for a while now with no problems. Better half, though, does NOT like switching back and forth between the 2 browsers. For her, it is a big pain. I have tried to make it a simple as I can, but she still hates BOTH of them because of the problems playing games on POGO. I thought about switching to Firefox, but wonder if that will have it’s share of trouble also. I’ll probably experiment with it for a while to see what happens. (Not in a rush to do that.) BUT, everyone here knows that when Momma ain’t happy, nobody’s happy.

Thanks, again, to all for the help and advice on this.

It is a good idea to have two or three different browsers installed and ready to use. Some websites work better with one browser, others with another browser. And if you have Firefox with NoScript installed, some websites simply won’t work, no matter how many scripts you allow. I have Firefox and Opera installed, and I use Opera when Firefox (with NoScript) simply won’t get the job done.

My wife uses Opera when she is on my computer, because she doesn’t want to have to fool with allowing sufficient scripts in order to be able to get a site to work properly.

I always have at minimum 3 browsers on all devices, both Windows and android. Yes, I might have 3 different browsers open at once.

On this current Win 7 32 bit desktop, I have Palemoon (based on old FF), FF ESR Quantum, Vivaldi, and of course IE 11, which I rarely ever use.

The other 3 Windows 7 computers and two android tablets and smartphone also have more than chrome installed.

      Got coffee?
