Reader WL posted this in response to the Third Party Updates entry. It’s important, and I wanted to repeat it here, so everybody can see it. Thanks, W

Couldn’t Oracle just provide a check box for removing priors?!?! Those who need priors could just ignore the check box. Or they could make the option be to NOT uninstall priors.

Some installers (e.g VLC)give users the option to retain their cache and “settings” from prior versions.

To manage Java removals and installs, thus to control versioning, one useful tool is JavaRa

This utility for Widnows needs .NET Framework but will insure a clean install of the new version.

Chrome for Windows upgrade can indeed zap tabs if more than nine are open at the time of relaunch. I do in fact use bookmarks, even History to make sure nothing bad happens. If I get advance warning (thanks, Woody!) I can simply save and close the current tabs (as Bookmarks or Export History — may need an Extension for the latter) and then hit About Chrome on the “hamburger icon”. I like to do browser upgrades with no unnecessary tabs or extensions active, because you never know.

In my tests, Chrome 41 on Windows (and Linux) is stable and as fast as Chrome 40. No major glitches noticed yet. And it comes with Pepper Flash 16.0.0.305 already installed.

Much smoother in both OSes than my Firefox 35 to 36 upgrade experiences.

I use the Chrome extension FreshStart (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/freshstart-cross-browser/nmidkjogcjnnlfimjcedenagjfacpobb) to deal with disappearing tabs. It has what it calls Crash Recovery which has saved my bacon several times. Just set the option ‘On’ and it does the job.

My results for the Java JRE 8u40 install were different than mentioned. After the installation I checked and while old Java versions folders still exist they are empty and, Programs and Features only shows the newly installed version.

Adobe updated Flash Player to version 17.0.0.134 for most browsers on March 12:

The latest Chrome update to 41.0.2272.89 on March 10 incorporates this flash version in its internal “Pepper” Flash Player.
