I don’t know what I have done – maybe it is problems with Nortons being over protective & adjusting my settings (Norton’s has caused heaps of dramas and is now gone in favour of AVG. I know AVG slows things down but it’s a lot more stable.) Whatever the reason, I can’t pick up messages from mail.com, hotmail etc. I can log in, but can’t retrieve messages. I know these free email accounts aren’t brilliant, but when you travel a bit, they are easier to use than pop – and I’ve never had problems getting my messages before so I think it is an issue confined to my home pc .
I use 98SE & guess my settings have been affected. Surely there is an easy fix? I hope? (I admit I am well overdue for a real big reformat and clean out but if I can procrastinate that bit longer….)
    Thanks again
    Willow

      Retrieve?
Do you mean as in download with Outlook, or do you mean you can’t see your Inbox?

Lief – re our email discussion, I’d say you are right about it being a javascript fault…So over to any lounger who has encountered similar problems. Have I “turned off” over “wiped out” my javascript settings and how do I undo the damage?
        Many thanks

Take a look at your Active Scripting settings for the Internet Zone.

In IE, Tools > Internet Options… > Security tab > highlight Internet > click Custom Level

In the resulting dialog, scroll nearly all the way to the bottom. Depending on your paranoia factor, you can set these options to “Prompt” or “Enable” and try that out. But… since your mailboxes often are full of stuff from strangers, this might not be the best idea. As you can see from the illustration, it is preferable to treat mail like potential radioactive waste and allow it to do nothing to your system. I hope you don’t need to Enable active scripting to read your mail!

If you can’t resolve your problem with AVG (assuming that’s the cause), I can recommend another product in the same price bracket – AntiVir
