Here is previous thread about Java issues in MSIE. Now Java is not working in other browsers (esp. Firefox).

I deleted & reinstalled Java, as Pilgrim recommended. (See text below). No change. In fact, my control panel no longer shows a java logo (cup), just a generic blank sheet with the corner folded.
Here are some specific problems during attempts to install.
* There is a checkbox about “change default installation folder” or such. I’ve gone through this procedure many times. At NO point is there a point where I can actually CHOOSE the destination.
As I said, I’ve tried it many times. Recenty I re-created a Java folder in Program Files. From the web page you recommend, I actually could choose a destination–at first. I think the same old box came up.
* Early in the installation process, there is a dialog box that says Java is already installed, do I want to uninstall the previous version and “re-install.” At about this time, I realize there is always a SECOND dialog box asking the same thing. I have watched my mouse clicks to make sure I’m not signalling a double install, and this is not the case.
Subsequent Java tests don’t show the animations (or whatever.)
Firefox, via Plug-ins or Tools, does report Java being enabled.
Just to make things more exciting, I’ve had somewhat similar problems with Adobe Flash Player (Shockwave).
I’ve seen reference to Java Script, Control Module (?), maybe Runtime environment (that could have been Flash)–how many components of Java do I need?

Note: My Firewall is not blocking any Java or Flash internet access.

1. Download the latest version of Java from here: Java Downloads for All Operating Systems. You will want the very first one at the top of the list: “Windows XP/Vista/2000/2003/2008 Online”
2. Close IE and all other running programs
3. Double-click the .exe file to install Java. It should uninstall your current version.
4. Return to the Java Test page to see if all looks okay and you get verification of a successful installation
IF the installation has a problem or fails (with an error dialog)
1. Close all running programs
2. Go to “C:Program FilesJava” … Delete the “Java” folder – yes, the entire folder
3. Reboot
4. Install Java again using the file previously downloaded above
5. Visit the Java Test site again…
This has been my practice over the years, especially when I have encountered a problem installation of an updated version. It has worked for me and many others. YMMV.
