Java RE can not be installed nor uninstalled – neither Adobe Reader

Any time I try to update Java RE it fails because the old version can not be uninstalled by its own installer:
The message is: “-Error 1606. Could not access network location :. “.
Of course it can’t. it is a stand alone computer (with an home-network for the internet) and all instalments have always be done directly from the C-disk. Oracle advices – if error 1606 occurs – to use the off-line full version, I already did so.
This happens on my two Windows 7 computers and on a XP-machine, and before it happened under Vista etc etc. I used last time the version 7.0, hoping the trouble would be over. but it is the same all over again.
I have a workaround : uninstall all of JavaRE by Revouninstaller (it won’t uninstall either, but removes hundreds of registerkeys and all files (advanced mode)) after that the update-version can be installed, but next time the same problem will be there.

The same problem – same message etc. – is there with Adobe Acrobat Reader. But in that case the solution is easier. Remove all with Revouninstaller and use another pdf-viewer. Problem solved.

Who has any idea what this mess it all about ??? Thanks for advise.

There was an ad blocking some of the instructions so I have copied them here:

Instructions
1 Go to your “Start” menu and click “Run.”

2 Enter the phrase “regedit” and hit the “Enter” button.

3 Click “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders” in your computer registry editor.

4 Right-click your mouse on the words “Common Administrator Tools” on your registry editor screen.

5 Enter the phrase “%ALLUSERSPROFILE%Start MenuProgramsAdministrative Tools” in the data window.

6 Click “File” and hit “Enter.”

7 Reboot your laptop or desktop.

On my Win 7 Ultimate registry there is not a String Value as shown in 4. This value can be added by Right Clicking in the windows and selecting new string value, naming the string value as shown in #4 above without the quotes. Then right click the string value you just created and choose modify, then entering the value in #5 above (without the quotes. you should be able to copy and paste these values.) Reboot and these values will become a part of the registry.

I guess I’m not sure how this works, but worth a try.

It looks as though you have either a faulty Java installation or a corrupted uninstallation.
Considering that you have already removed most, if not all the registry entries already, you will need to find the root folders and delete them.

Jwitalka and Ted: The e-how instructions are clear (and not blocked (thanks to ABP in firefox?), And the additions of Ted where very helpfull, because in the Win7 home edition registry the string was missing too. I added the string and value. reboot and still the (un-)installer doesn’t function, same error.
Clint: The advises of Java Fixer don’t apply a) they suppose that the uninstaller still functions, quod non b) I used JavaRA and there are no old Java .msi registry.
So still the only workaround is to delete with RevoUninstaller all keys and maps, install freshly, and have the same problem again at the next update.

Each Win 7 installation is somewhat different. it’s hard at times to find a solution. If your work around does work, you might have to do this each time. Kind of a pain, but in the past with my PC, and even with Jave 7, the old installation was not uninstalled by the Java installer before installing the latest version. it is supposed to do this but doesn’t. Especially with Java, I always uninstall the old versions with Revo Uninstaller Pro before installing the new versions. (I say versions because I use both x86 and x64 versions of my browsers)

I used to encounter the “cannot access network location” message a lot on Vista, less so on Windows 7. No matter – the solution, if you are installing an updated version of the software, is to download Windows Install Cleanup utility. Install it and run it, and delete the offending application from the window. Your software will now install with no problem. To just uninstall an application is a little bit more involved. Run the cleanup utility and delete the software from the list. Then go to Program Files and delete the software from there. If you’re really ambitious, run a registry cleaner and delete the registry entries for that software.

Thanks 987 for confirming the problem, nice to know I’m not the only one. Is it a specific Java and Adobe problem?
Basically, our workarounds are the same. But using Revo uninstaller advanced mode is easier than doing all the deletions in three different steps.

Dieten, Java was the one application on which this problem occurred most often but I’ve seen it on Office and a number of others. Sometimes uninstalling software, when you just want to update it, like Java, is a pain. The Cleanup utility is a handy tool to have in any case. I agree that an uninstaller like Revo is handier if you just want to uninstall software.
