I have Java version 6 update 11 installed on both a Vista and an XP system. I have unchecked both the “Place Java icon in system tray” box and the “Check for Updates Automatically” on each computer. There is no problem on the XP system, but the settings are not “sticking” on the Vista system. I set the Java Control Panel options to my liking, hit Apply and/or OK. I then re-open the control panel immediately and the settings are reset.

It’s almost as if I need to run the Java Control Panel as an administrator, but I can’t find any such animal. It never complains when I do the changes… it just never implements them. I’m stumped.

    Cheers,

Try running C:Program FilesJavajre6binjavacpl.exe as administrator. That worked on my Vista Ultimate system.

Thanks Joe. Your suggestion resolved my problem. Ironically, I was only half serious about running this as an administrator. None of my research into this problem indicated that you should (or even could!) run a Control Panel applet “as administrator”.

        Cheers,
