Should I install the latest Java 6.0.14 if I don’t use the Windows 7, IE8, Windows Server 2008 Sp2 or Windows Vista? Is there any need for it if only running Windows XP and IE 7?

I’d install it if I were you. There’s no reason not to – I’ve installed it in my XP installation and I still use IE7 also. Here’s a quote from the site Tony linked to:
Bug Fixes:
This feature release does not contain any new fixes for security vulnerabilities to its previous release, Java SE 6 Update 13. Users who have Java SE 6 Update 13 have the latest security fixes and do not need to upgrade to this release to be current on security fixes.
Then they proceed with a very LONG table of bug fixes. If you care about getting rid of one or more possible bugs that might bite you that’s even more reason to install it.

Well! I did install the update and what a disaster. Secunia didn’t recognize Java and my Pogo game failed to load, told me I didn’t have Java installed or the incorrect version.
I had to uninstall Java Update 14 and then all Java versions disappeared, no Java in Control Panel, no Java in All Programs. I had to reinstall Java Update 13, now everything is the way it should be.

Java update 14’s not for me.

The fact that Secunia did not recognize the latest java version is no revelation or is a problem that would affect Java itself.

Pogo? Don’t know anything about that except that it needs to be updated to “see” Java 14.
You could probably run it in compatibility mode.

Secunia didn’t recognize Java…

That’s strange. I installed update 14 when it was first released. The Secunia Online Software Inspector had no trouble recognizing it. I did not try the Secunia PSI, however.

Did you un-install prior versions of Java before installing update 14?

More importantly, did you download the right Java package? You need to download JRE 6 Update 14 unless you need the full development kit (JDK 6 Update 14). The downloaded executable for JRE 6 Update 14 is named jre-6u14-windows-i586.exe.

Gloria Be! You must have some kind of bad karma, as many times as something you touch turns to … well, you know.

I also run Secunia and didn’t have any problems. Of course, I don’t have any non-Windows games like Pogo installed, so maybe that’s my good fortune!

Thanks Al, I was sitting here waiting to see if anyone replied. I’ll install it, won’t hurt anything like you said.

Good Morning Al,

First, explain who’s Gloria Be?
Next, I’ve reinstalled Java and tested it which it passed. I’ll run Secunia again and hope that the problem doesn’t rear it’s ugly head again.

Perhaps you should try playing a game like Pogo. It would give you something to do besides picking on me. How about that?

Your good friend,

Gloria E (not Be)

It was just a “play on words” m’dear and no offense was intended – ya know, people say “glory be” sometimes. I couldn’t resist the temptation but I’ll be more careful from now on.

My dear Al,

You didn’t offend me, and I didn’t mean to imply that I was insulted or annoyed by Gloria Be. I was kidding you when I asked who that lady was. I remember hearing people say Glory Be. Please forgive me if I sounded like you had said something wrong. I like kidding with you and I have a very think skin, so it would take much, much more than that to get my dander up.
