Java Test( using Secunia PSI )

Hi Loungers,

Is your version of Java vurnerable to attack ? The only way I know is to look in Secunia PSI, ‘Secure Browsing’ to see if your browsers are safe.

If you just keep it updated you don’t need to run another program to check if it is updated.

And which version would that be?

If it there is no update what is the recommendation? Uninstall JAVA? Take you chances?

Note that Secunia considers an app vulnerable to attack based strictly on whether you have the latest version not by any known vulnerability. An update could be simply to fix some user function you may not even be using and Secunia would still consider it vulnerable. I also found Secunia finding vulnerabilities when it finds old dlls from previous versions of an app that are no longer used from previous updates or incomplete installs. Secunia is a nice app for a quick and dirty check for updates but I wouldn’t take the results as gospel in all cases.

Your assertion that you can only check Java for security through the checking of ‘Secure Browsing’ is not entirely correct. Secunia will alert you autonomously if your Java version is not up to date. Secure Browsing will alert you to other browser vulnerabilities non related to Java.

My last upgrade of java, just a couple of weeks ago now, totally hozed up several web pages, including my main Album page at “Photobucket” where I store all my pictures to share over the net.
I don’t know if Java was responsible or not, but I could not do any System Restores either.
So I backed up my latest doc’s and did a Ghost Restore back to a date before I had installed that version of java. Then everything worked just fine, again.
I may never update Java again! Not without making a fresh Ghost Backup first, anyway.

If that was Java 7.0 there have been several reports of issues with it. I’ve not run into any yet but that may just be a fluke.
