I have a JAVA update awaiting me to install on my computer. Is there a way to view what and where this update is before I pull the trigger? Do these updates typically come from Microsoft?

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

It is very likely that this is a security update, java has at least as many of these as any other software on your computer.
Java updates do not come from Microsoft, Java is currently owned by Sun, see http://www.java.com for more information about it.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 4, 2009 at 12:02 pm #1188817Java, Adobe flash player, quicktime, and Adobe acrobat reader are 4 programs that are critical tokeep patched to the latest security patches. A lot of malware attacks are made through these programs. One way to know when there is a new security patch for these programs is to download and install Secunia Personel Software Inspector. It can run in the background(usually scan once per week) and will let you know if these programs are not patched. From inside this software, you can usually click on the Fix It link for each program and it will download and install the patch.

If you double click the Java update icon it should open and I believe it tells you what version is available to install. Then you can go to the site StuartR mentioned to research the release if you care to.

AskWoody PlusDecember 4, 2009 at 4:06 pm #1188949I tried to do the lastest update for Java version 6 update 17 and I got the following:
While Java installation is in progress, a message box with the following error is displayed:Error 25099. Unzipping core files failed.
I did the work around on my windows XP that Java recommended and had to revert back to older version on my vista. Do you know when this will be fixed or if it has?
Thanks Mark
