I previously installed the June 2023 OOB patch for .Net Framework 4.8 (KB5028579).  Although there is a subsequent CU for .Net Framework 4.8 (KB5028853) it has not been offered by WU.  The description of these two updates is virtually identical and I’m guessing that the installation of the OOB patch obviates the need for the 7/11 CU and that the omission is NOT an error by WU.

Are others experiencing this and can anyone confirm that this is expected behavior?

Given WUMgr uses Windows Update to do the work, it seems likely the patch is not required.

I don’t use WUMgr, its not relevant to my question.  When I write WU I mean Windows Update.  Thanks anyway.

Sorry, the bad bioware has been rebooted overnight.  🙂

          cheers, Paul

I don’t have the answer to your question, but I do have a suggestion.

Go to the Microsoft Update Catalog, download, and install the appropriate .Net Framework 4.8 (KB5028853) update. This approach is sort of a belt and suspenders approach.

I made the same observation in my posted question.  Nothing new here.

Neither patch includes new security updates. Unless you specifically had issues with an application, I would not install either patch.

        Susan,

As I said earlier, in my case the OOB patch has already been installed.  The question at hand is why the July 11 CU has not been offered.

    • #2573091

If the OoB is installed, it’s sufficient for requirements hence the .Net 4.8 KB5028853 is ignored by WU.
If the OoB isn’t installed, KB5028853 will be offered by WU.

None of which are security essential…
If it were security catagorised KB5028853 would be offered via WU irrespective and supersede the OoB.

In a test VM I uninstalled the June .Net Framework OOB patch.  After two reboots the July 11 .Net Framework CU has not been offered by Windows Update.  Wushowhide does not report that the CU is available to be hidden or unhidden.  Dism does not report any corruption of the component store (/CheckHealth & /ScanHealth).

I thought that the comments by Microfix at #2573091 make sense and so I expected the CU to be offered once the OOB was uninstalled.

I wish I could report that uninstalling the OOB yielded the expected results but its just not the case.

I’ll ask again — have any other AskWoody users noted that after installing the June .Net Framework OOB the July 11 .Net Framework CU has not been offered by Windows Update?

I did not install the June .NET OOB updates.

I checked with WUMgr and I was NOT offered any July .NET updates.

I have been offered the July Cumulative Update and the MSRT (not installed yet).

I have also NOT installed any of the June .NET framework OOB updates for both of my Windows 10 Home v22H2 systems (one x64 and another x86 system).

Both systems have got the respective 2023-07 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework patches via Windows Update while on the .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 installation AND then after the upgrade to .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 were completed.

Very interesting.  Divergent experiences continue.  Anyone else?

      Yes!

I have 2 PC’s where the June OOB was installed and, even thought they’ve both been offered the July Cumulative Update for Windows 10 (KB5028166), they haven’t being offered the July .NET updates either via the “normal” Windows update check nor a “manual check” using WUmgr.

FYI, since some previous Cumulative .NET updates were never offered via Windows update (they had to be “manually” downloaded and installed), what you should really be asking is whether any AskWoody users who didn’t install the .NET OOB have been offered the July .NET updates?

BTW, I manually downloaded both parts of the July .NET update for Win10 22H2 (KB5028849 & KB5028853) and they installed on both of my PCs with no issues or warnings.
