Nope. These are all optional, non-security patches. So those who take my advice and don’t install non-security patches should be just fine.

Woody, Found 2 Microsoft Office patches waiting..
one is KB2881030 for Office 2010. I have 2007 on
my machine………. why would I have been given this one I wonder. The other is the junk mail filter, which I declined last round as I don’t use Outlook.
Neither are being installed……. but I’m curious about why they offered me something for Office 2010
when I don’t have that version. Thanks LT

I think they are flagged as Important and not Optional or Recommended. In fact I don’t remember Optional patches for Office since updated help files were pushed out for Office 2007 very long time ago.
To me Important non-security means functional updates which may or may not be useful.
I am not recommending installing them now, install if desired only after they prove to be reliable.
Just a warning for those deciding not to update: skipping too many patches may make Windows Update client slow due to inter-dependencies.

Version cross-over is fairly common. Usually it’s because some weird thing has snuck onto your computer.

When the patches arrived, were they checked, optional?

You have components which are technically part of Office 2010 on your computer. They can be anything even remotely related, so it is nothing unusual.

Windows 7 with Office 2013. Third month when the Office Updates (the early ones, non-security) come initially as Important, not checked. I think in few weeks, those which will survive not being retired due to reliability problems will be made checked by default.
Historically, for the last few months we had on average 1 update being retired each month if I remember well, so no early patching is recommended.

I received one update for Office – KB2881030, even though I have Office 2007.

It is flagged as Important and unchecked.

Reading the KB: the prerequisite to install this update says “You must have Microsoft 2010 Service Pack 2 installed”, I certainly don’t.

Here is what KB2881030 says —

“Fixes the following issue:

Assume that you insert or change a hyperlink in an .xsl workbook and then save it in any version of Excel in Windows 10. Then, you open the .xls workbook in Excel 2010. In this situation, the workbook is corrupted. ”

I don’t have Windows 10 or Office 2010. So even though Microsoft wants to install this non-security update it’s going to go into the hidden list with the other junk.

Yes, there’s three of them – versions 21 and 25, if memory serve.

I think you all have Office 2010 SP2 installed and not knowing about it 🙂
It can be for example an Access 2010 runtime with SP2 installed by a third-party application which use it. It can be any other component of Office in the category of “readers” which do not require licence if installed by a third-party application. It is more common that you would expect.

I have Windows 7 and MS Word 2013. I had a whole bunch of updates for Office 2010 and a couple for MSoft powerpoint viewer (all listed as important). I uninstalled powerpoint viewer and now have no important updates to install. So it’s probably Powerpoint viewer bringing the old office updates that don’t relate to your version.

Just found your post @ch100. I looked in installed updates and couldn’t find Office 2010 SP2, there is one Access update and this is for 2007.

I did find KB2825635, it was installed on 15/5/14.

At that time I was not paying a lot of attention (as much as I do now) to available updates. Would it be wise to uninstall this update and would this put a stop to any Office 2010 offerings?

It’s a month after you wrote your comment, but I’m just now putting on the June patches, and I have received the same update for Office 2010 even though I have Office 2007.

I searched for the KB number on AskWoody and found a couple of people asking about it, including your question which received some answers,
and a question somewhere else here (I think on this discussion thread further down) where a poster copied and pasted the MS explanation of this patch, which apparently is:
“Fixes the following issue: Assume that you insert or change a hyperlink in an .xsl workbook and then save it in any version of Excel in Windows 10. Then, you open the .xls workbook in Excel 2010. In this situation, the workbook is corrupted.”

For my computer today, the patch is coming up as important and checked.

My search-engine search on this topic has turned up the same question on many other Windows forums (for ex., SevenForums and WindowsSecrets). Some people with Office 2007 installed it in June and reported no problems, other people said they would leave it uninstalled since it didn’t seem to apply to them.

The Microsoft prerequisite for installing this update is: “To apply this update, you must have Microsoft Office 2010 Service Pack 2 installed.”

I don’t have the prerequisite, Office 2010 Service Pack 2, and I’m not on the version of Windows that it seems to apply to, Windows 10.

However, Microsoft must think that it’s good for my system since it’s Important and checked.
*They really ought to have done a better job of explaining why they are sending it to people with Office 2007 who are not on Windows 10.*

I’m just being extra-cautious with updating anymore, so I think that for now I’m going to leave it uninstalled this month. If it’s still in my Windows Update list in the future, I’ll revisit that decision.

If anyone has information about why this update would be important for an Office 2007 computer on Windows 7 that does not have the required prerequisite installed, I’m all ears. 🙂
