I hadn’t intended to update the O/S, and had set up the metered connection impediment to avoid updating automatically. However, this keeps me from updating Office–even when I answer Yes to the prompt alerting me to the potential cost of updating on a metered connection. Although it seems to start, it simply will not update unless I connect with an Ethernet cable. And that’s when 1703 got me.
It worked for a very short time before my bluetooth mouse suddenly froze. It froze so badly, I couldn’t just turn it off and use the trackpad. I had to use the keyboard to get to the Start menu and restart.
After a bit of poking around I found that the bluetooth radio was so far off as to not appear in Device Manager until I viewed hidden items.
Additionally, there was an Unknown USB Device where previously there had been none, and no amount of updating drivers would fix it. I checked both Windows and Samsung for drivers and there were none that I didn’t already have.
I have no idea if the Unknown USB Device caused a conflict, or the Intel Bluetooth device was to blame. I couldn’t even tell if the device had died. However, after much ringing of hands and moaning, I decided to stop wasting my time.
So today I rolled back to the previous install, and after turning my mouse back on I found that the Unknown is Known and the bluetooth is back on the air. There was a little bit of adjusting settings, but the rollback went smoothly.
Big sigh of relief.
