I just got the same KB 3162593 as an optional update. Because it is a Silverlight update (I don’t have Silverlight on this computer) I sent it to Hidden Updates. I guess it is just another way MS is trying to trick us into installing Windows 10. So far, I refuse to do it ! !

GuestJune 23, 2016 at 8:01 am #40282The ad is on all kb Support Pages, i.e. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2458544, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3079213. I’ll send a screenshot. I use Firefox. Could also reproduce in Chrome. Sent a Chrome-screenshot already.

ManagerJune 23, 2016 at 9:06 am #40286The plot thickens….
You’re saying you have GWX installed (KB 3035583), or GWX Control Panel?
It’s easy for the web site to check and see if you’re running Win7 or 8.1 (the User-Agent string in the HTTP header). If so, they could show the ad. But how would the Microsoft site know anything more?

AskWoody PlusJune 23, 2016 at 9:47 am #40287The Microsoft “Get Silverlight” download page says that Chrome is no longer supported. I uninstalled Silverlight because of that. I rarely use Firefox and almost never Explorer, both of which support Sivlerlight. I assume I’m not going to miss out on anything that uses Silverlight to “enhance” my web experience as Microsoft would say.

GuestJune 23, 2016 at 5:14 pm #40298I receive the update this morning, whereas it should’ve update yesterday as I didn’t get any from yesterday. As well as the date of the update is showing it update yesterday. The strange thing is that I’m not from Norway or Serbia (I’m actually from Australia). I ended up installing the update because it is listed as important but after successfully installed, it didn’t ask me to restart my computer so I have to restart it manually.

GuestJune 24, 2016 at 12:15 am #40301Hi Woody:
I’m running windows 7 SP1. I live in California. I don’t know what is happening here but to me it is quite bizarre. Here it is:
1.Placed Microsoft Silverlight , KB3162593 optional in hide on 6/22/2016, 12.6 MB
2. Placed microsoft silverlight KB3126036 in hide,6/23/2016, 9:00pm, 12.6 MB
3. Placed microsoft silverlight KB3106614 in hide, 6/23/2016,9:14 PM, optional 12.6 MB
4.Placed microsoft silverlight KB3080333 in hide,6/23/2016, 9:18 PM,optional,12.5 MB5
5. placed microsoft silverlight KB3056819 in hide,6/23/2016,9:20 PM,optional,12.5MB
6.placed microsoft silverlight KB2977218 in hide,6/23/2016,9:23PM,optional, 12.5MB
7.Microsoft silverlight KB2636927,9:28PM, optional,12.5 MB, did not hide left it in updates to hopefully stop this madness????? As of 10:30PM 6/23/2016, (since I did not hide KB2636927, new updates for microsoft silverlight have stopped )Update for microsoft silverlight staying at KB2636927. I have never had anything like this happen before??? And Microsoft silverlight was deleted from my programs and features.
Comments appreciated

GuestJune 24, 2016 at 9:02 pm #40305Herb,
The same thing happened to me a while back. I could be wrong but it seemed to me that these were all versions of the same sort of patch and if you hide one of them it then offers you the previous version. So you hide (say) version 10, it then offers you the previous version 9; you hide version 9, it then offers you the previous version 8 etc etc.
I think I ended up hiding about 10 of them before it stopped. Good luck. -

AskWoody_MVPJune 28, 2016 at 5:25 am #40308I think the current one is offered as a Cumulative (Rollup) Update and contains all the previous updates.
My point of view is that it should be installed by those who use Silverlight regardless of their own timezone and not installed by those who decided that they don’t need Silverlight at all. -

AskWoody_MVPJune 28, 2016 at 5:32 am #40309@woody I think Silverlight comes in 2 flavours on Windows & Microsoft Update for Windows 7.
If Silverlight is installed, then the update comes as an Important Update.
If Silverlight is not installed, then it either comes as an Optional Microsoft Product if Microsoft Update is enabled, or is not offered at all if only Windows Update is enabled (or Microsoft Update is disabled, which is the same thing). This is the full product with all the patches included.
Both versions, the update and the full product are the same for the same round of updates. -

AskWoody_MVPJune 28, 2016 at 12:51 pm #40311It is OK to install Cindy. If you were not asked to restart, it was because Silverlight and its components were not in use at the time of the update installation, which is a good thing as Silverlight is used only for a very limited number of web sites. I am in Australia too ๐ and I am in favour of installing the update for consistency, if Silverlight was previously installed.

AskWoody_MVPJune 28, 2016 at 1:05 pm #40312@lgjr3491 You would have to uninstall Silverlight completely from Programs and Features. KB3162593 is an Update Rollup and upgrades the whole installation of Silverlight.
At the end of the day, Woody is right that Silverlight should be uninstalled by the vast majority of end-users who should not be concerned with any updates for Silverlight.
If by accident Silverlight is required on a web site, the user would be informed about it and offered to install it. -

GuestJuly 4, 2016 at 3:33 pm #40313Woody — While I always look to your great advice, here, regarding Silverlight, you are misleading the readers.
Whether you like it or not, there are at least three major financial systems that are built on Silverlight:
* Fidelity ATP software
* Thinkorswim trading software
* freestockcharts.com – a longtime, well-respected real time charting website/serviceSo please don’t say Silverlight is dead or is useless because these 3 examples alone mean that many thousands or more of users need Silverlight.
