I just updated one of our W7 Pro SP1 64-bit machines with four Important updates, and after an hour lost in a coma, the machine finally booted into Windows successfully.  So far, so good.

I then did another check for any further Important updates and KB3177467 appeared.  As that seemed like an old KB number, I checked my installed updates and found that KB3177467 had been installed on 24May2017!

I searched for info on this anomaly and found a comment about this KB3177467 perhaps being a new version of the older KB3177467, but I’m unclear as to whether it is safe or advisable to install this current KB3177467 or whether, since this computer is running well, it’s better to hide this new KB3177467 update and leave well enough alone.

In the absence of definite information to the contrary, I’m thinking it’s best to follow the old rule, “If it ain’t broke…..”  However, better ideas will be welcome and appreciated.

There are 2 versions of 3177467, one from 2016 and one from 2018. You do want the latter even if the former is already installed. Either let Windows Update install it for you or install it manually from the Update Catalog.

Edit to add: 3177467 is a servicing stack, meant to help the update process; I’ll defer to the more knowledgeable folks here for the explanation, but your not having the latest version might have something to do with the hour-long wait period you experienced.

Servicing stack updates are important. They show up when all other important updates are installed or hidden… to be installed by themselves, since they are updating the update system itself.

Thanks to both of you for the excellent info.  I’ll wait till Woody gives the “OK to Patch” signal for the February patches, then see if KB3177467 pops up after they’re all installed.  If so, I’ll install KB3177467 in its latest incarnation and see how things go.
