KB4023057 promises to provide the Local Group Policy Editor with control, not only over the target version 21H1, but also over the target platform Windows 10 — I do not want Windows 11 getting installed while it is the mess that it is reported to be.

Yesterday, on my 64-bit Pro desktop with the most recent 21H1,  I installed KB4023057   — no problems — and I quickly found the new LGPE field where I could insert ‘Windows 10’.

Then I installed it on my wife’s 64-bit Dynabook Satellite Pro C10-H, also running the most recent 21H1 Pro (and deemed suitable for Windows 11, which my desktop is not),  It was offered by Windows Update, and it seemed to install OK, but unfortunately things are now crook in Tallarook:

    1.  There is no new field to insert ‘Windows 10’ in the LGPE, contrary to the promise.

    2.  The update KB4023057 is listed on Windows Update –> View Update History as ‘Successfully installed’, but it is NOT listed in Control Panel –> Uninstall a Program –> View installed updates.  This means that I cannot uninstall it and try again.

    3.  Windows Update informs me that everything is up to date.

So I now have no defence against Windows 11, and I have an update that seems to be partially installed.  What does a non-techie do now?

I would try manually installing it.  If it’s not listed in add/remove it probably didn’t complete.  Or just wait for the September security updates as the value will be in that release.

Windows 11 won’t be shoved, but offered so we have time.

KB4023057 doesn’t promise any of this and doesn’t add any new entries in GP.

What version does the second PC run ? type ‘winver’ in search box.

This update includes reliability improvements to Windows Update Service components in all editions of Windows 10

This update includes files and resources that address issues that affect the update processes in Windows 10 that may prevent important Windows updates from being installed.

This update may try to reset network settings if problems are detected, and it will clean up registry keys that may be preventing updates from being installed successfully.

This update may repair disabled or corrupted Windows operating system components that determine the applicability of updates to your version of Windows 10.

This update may compress files in your user profile directory to help free up enough disk space to install important updates.

This update may reset the Windows Update database to repair the problems that could prevent updates from installing successfully. Therefore, you may see that your Windows Update history was cleared…

Are you sure you have looked in the proper place for the TRV entry ?
I was once looking for a setting in GP and couldn’t find it. I was looking by mistake in the wrong place : instead under ‘Computer Configuration’ I have looked under ‘User Configuration’

      Suggestion:
Try Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Programs and Features OR Settings > Apps & Features
and look for the entry “Microsoft Update Health Tools” a.k.a. KB4023057.

      Cheers.

      September 1, 2021—KB5005101 (OS Builds 19041.1202, 19042.1202, and 19043.1202) Preview (microsoft.com)

The group policy is in that update  – not the Microsoft health tools update.

      Dear Susan,

First, my apologies.  I can’t find whatever article I was reading about KB4023057 adding to LCPE the ability to stay on Windows 10 (top box) and 21H1 (second box), and from your and Alex5723’s comments, I must have misread something.  The woes of not being a techie!

KB5005101 that you mention is listed in ‘Other Updates’ on the desktop where the new LGPE box was added, but not on the notebook where the LGPE box was not added.  This confirms what you have said in your most recent post.  (I did search various places in LGPE  on the notebook for the relevant entry , but I cannot find anything.)

On the notebook, I tried to uninstall KB4023057, but as I reported, `The update KB4023057 is listed on Windows Update –> View Update History as ‘Successfully installed’, but it is NOT listed in Control Panel –> Uninstall a Program –> View installed updates.’  So the update seems to have been half-installed?

I read  https://www.makeuseof.com/manually-uninstall-windows-10-updates  and ran the command  wmic qfe list brief /format:table  in an elevated CMD window.  The resulting list appeared to be the same as the Control Panel list. (Although it gave all the KB numbers instead of only a few of them, whereas the Control Panel list had other details that the CMD list did not have — why is Microsoft being so unsystematic and confusing?)

KB4023057 is mentioned on the Notebook’s Windows Update list, but not on the Control Panel  or CMD lists, even though the CMD list contains other updates at the same time.

The notebook with the problem is running 21H1, 10.0.19043.1165, while the desktop without the problem is 21H1,  10.0.19043.1202, and Windows Update reports that both are up to date.  Yet the notebook is Windows-11-capable according to ByteJams, but the desktop is not — for various reasons.

I don’t understand.  Microsoft is one of the largest and wealthiest companies in the world, and Windows is their main product, yet it is totally impossible for an experienced, well-qualified user with some coding ability to follow their procedures or understand the strange turgid language that they use on their webpages.  Anyway, now that you have told me that Windows 11 will not get pushed, I will take you advice and do nothing.  Thank you very much for your time.
