One of today’s crop of updates keeps failing installation on an XP Pro and an XP Home box. It’s only 249 KB!

Am I alone in getting this consistent failure?

Me, too on two XP Pro computers. The Microsoft update list has a bunch of people complaining about this. You can download the update manually if you can find the KB article (took some searching).

Thanks, I found it on a Google Groups search.

PS It would have been more accurate to say that it was the Windows Update download which failed, not the install!

I get the bulletin via e-mail, with link to the monthly bulletin, but there are other ways to quick information. Now since this is such a major event every month, updates or no updates (to be, or not to be) smile, finding them is not that hard.

          Some different approaches:

          1. From the main page: Microsoft Security Home Page click “This month’s updates”. You will get to the simple advice use MU or Automatic Updates. sigh
          2. Now, that is not what we want; there is a sentence: Note IT professionals and systems administrators should go to Microsoft TechNet. Click MS TechNet. (Saving this page, “current”, will always get the latest Bulletin in search.)
          3. Finally click, in this case/month: Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary for February 2006

          Another way:
If you have the page Microsoft TechNet: Home as a favourite, then this time in the month the bulletin will surely be at the top of the page, and so it is.

Obviously it is at the top of the TechNet sub page “Security” as well.

Well guys, at least I know I’m not out of it this time around.

      Thanks,

Here’s some information on how to download/install KB913446 manually direct from Microsoft for all versions of Windows to which this update pertains. There is special information for those that experienced the “Failed” error when trying to install: KB913446.

Just a note to say that the manual download-update worked fine for me. ( after a few failures with the auto method.)
        Thanks.

Worse still, the symptoms the fix is supposed to prevent or cure (I’m not sure which) just happen to be identical to symptoms I have been experiencing for a number of days now on one computer, although my other two are OK.

Anyway, I’ll try the manual download and hope it cures it, but if what I have is what the patch is supposed to cure then there really is a problem in the wild, apart from a finicky fix.

Success with manual download, separately, on three different computers (for test purposes).

My only complaint is that Microsoft says to click on the Download button in the top right corner. If Microsoft doesn’t know right from left, then what is the world coming to?

      John,

MS has updated the security bulletin to say that the install issue with the various tools has been corrected.

Thanks for the info. At home I used the “manual download” method. At work, the automatic download seems to have happened, but it won’t be until tomorrow that I can check all PCs. Oh, and the server!

      John,
As Joe Perez noted the problem was apparently corrected. I had no problem downloading KB913446.
      Regards,
      Slim
