On my Dell XPS 17, Function Key F5 turns keyboard backlighting on/off. From an off position, first tap of F5 turns the backlighting on full brightness. Another tap dims it to half brightness. Third tap turn it off completely.
No need to hit the fn key along with F5, just F5.
Attached jpg shows my F5 key.
I believe other manufacturers use different keys, and some require a combination of the fn key plus a second key.
Even Dell seems to be inconsistent. This Dell article How to Turn Off or On and Troubleshoot the Backlit Keyboard on Your Dell Laptop is dated August 2023. It notes that to turn on keyboard lighting on a Dell, you may have to hit F10 or the fn key plus F5, F6, F10, or Right Arrow.
Another complication: The above Dell article says keyboard backlighting must be enabled in BIOS. I guess mine was enabled when I got the XPS 17 a year-and-a-half ago. Since your Dell is less than a year old, if you are unable to turn keyboard backlighting on/off with a function key, you may want to see if itโs enabled in BIOS.

On my Logitech G600 there is a “sun”/ lighting icon above function keys top far right, and by Holding it down and pressing 0-6 or – + I affect lighting choices. Sunย & -0- is Steady ON…..
