Keyboard stops working but mouse works

I am using Windows 8.1 with a Wireless Microsoft Keyboard & Mouse 7000, which uses same USB. Occasionally my keyboard stops working and only makes a click sound through my speakers, but the mouse works just find.

I am not for sure if this is connected, but this last time I had held down a key for long time before the keyboard stopped working. I do not know if the other times, when the keyboard stopped working, whither this was the case or not.

Perhaps your battery is low in the keyboard.

Uninstall and reinstall the keyboard driver.

I believe MS still has a S/W available for these type input devices. Check out this list and see if you can find what you need.

I tried removing and reinstalling the software, which that did not help. However, I did isolate the cause, it happens when I hold down the Shift Key for a while, and it does every time I do it. I was thinking that it was the Control key, but that did not cause it but the right shift did.

It seems to me that you are turning on Filter Keys, which will slow down the rate at which the keyboard input will be accepted.

To disable this, visit Control Panel, Ease of Access center and select the option to Make the keyboard easier to use

Then click Setup Filter Keys

Finally uncheck the option to turn on filter keys when shift is pressed for 8 seconds:

This will prevent the keyboard ever going slow on you again :).

You may have just saved me $60+ for a new keyboard/mouse duo!
My Logitech MX3000 keyboard started displaying the same symptoms as the OP. I spent 30 mins on the phone with L’s tech supp, with no luck. Though though the temp wired kbd I’ve used since has been working fine, there were many reboots and such before I gave up on the orig kbd. I’m now using the original again, and it appears to be working as it used to (minus a zillion typos as my fingers get used to it again)!

Perhaps it’s not the filter keys and the problem will reoccur. Either way, to quote from South Park, “You know, I’ve learned something today.” Can’t beat that!
