When you log into Gmail the session information is stored in cookies. If you delete those cookies on exit you will have to login next time you fire up the browser.

Set the browser to retain the Gmail cookies on exit.

      cheers, Paul

Paul, unfortunately, all the settings I can find in Edge (none really in Gmail) are set so that Gmail cookies shouldn’t be deleted, so I’m not sure how to act upon your advice (sound though it is).  Any ideas?  (I tried doing a screen shot of my settings, but the jpg’s are too large to attach being significantly larger than the 2 MB limit.)

      Thanks,
      Steve

Try another browser to see if it’s a Chredge issue.

      Paul,

Oh, it is definitely a Chredge issue.  No problem with Firefox or with my Android phone.

When I exit Gmail in Chredge it doesn’t log me out. The suggestions for this are as Paul has said not deleting cookies (which it appears you don’t). The second suggestion is to clear the browser’s cache. According to Google, you have to sign out explicitly rather than having a setting. If that doesn’t clear the problem, then I don’t know.

Oddly enough, it also doesn’t happen with Chrome, which I just installed.  I’ve tried clearing the cache, I can’t see any place where it says I’m deleting cookies upon exit.  I’ve also tried deleting all my system utilities (e.g., Ccleaner, glary utilities, etc.), and totally uninstalled Edge and reinstalled.  The problem persists!  Maybe it’s one of those “features” and not a bug?!?

Here’s where you clear cookies on exit. Go to settings (Edge settings), then on the left ‘Privacy, search…’. There’s an entry for clearing cookies – mine is off. Perhaps yours is on….

You can add sites whose cookies won’t be cleared

UPDATE:  I finally bit the bullet (figuratively speaking, of course) and uninstalled Edge and then scrubbed the hard drive of all residuals of the browser that I could find, and then reinstalled it.  Lo and behold, forsooth it now works as it should and doesn’t kick me off of Gmail every time I shut it down.  So, the solution is a complete uninstall/reinstall cycle.
