If while viewing, creating, editing, etc. a document in Word you need to open another app such as your browser to check something on the Internet or Outlook to check an email or numerous other reasons you need to open another app while dealing with a Word document; then you will find this tip useful.

Following the instructions in the attached PDF file you can create a 2 or 3 key keyboard shortcut that will open any app you have installed on your system from within any Word document you have open in your Word program. Not having to leave the Word document, locate the shortcut to open that app, and clicking that shortcut to open that app will be a great time and clicks saver that will increase the savings every time you use it.

One extremely important point to remember for any keyboard shortcuts you may create.

If you want to delete a particular keyboard shortcut so it’ll be available for use with a different program, you must set the existing keyboard shortcut to “none” before you delete it.

If you don’t, Windows will remember what program it was assigned to (even after the shortcut’s been deleted) and you won’t be able to use it for anything else until you recreate the original and set it to “none” — BDTD!

These keyboard shortcuts are entirely in Word and do not affect the standard keyboard shortcuts in Windows. However, Word will not let you use a custom keyboard shortcut created in Windows.
Example: In Word the keyboard shortcut to copy is the same as it is in Windows…Ctrl + C. In Word if you assign that keyboard shortcut to another function such as to run a macro, that keyboard shortcut in Word will no longer copy, but run the macro. However, any where else in Windows besides a Word document Ctrl + C still copies.

Custom Windows keyboard shortcuts (usually made to Desktop and Start Menu shortcuts) are not controlled by Word, Word can’t change them, and thus can’t use them. Word has keyboard shortcuts that appear the same as the ones in Windows, but they really are separate processes.

Also Word allows you to remove a keyboard shortcut at any time with no ill effects to Word or Windows keyboard shortcuts.

Maybe I need to post how to create Windows custom keyboard shortcuts to open any app on your PC.
