Launch IE for web links (Word 2000)

Hi all,

Is there any way to force Word to always launch IE when an HTTP link is clicked in a Word document? I hate the default action, which is to display the HTML page in the Word application window. I would like to keep the original document in the application window.

Hi Julio,

Not sure about forcing a hyperlink to open in IE, but you can at least force it to open in a new page by default. If you right click on the hyperlink and select Toggle Field Codes, the actual field will be displayed. If you add the /n (forward slash + n) switch to the end of the code and then right click and select Update Field Codes, the hyperlink should now open in a new page, leaving your original document displaying in it’s own page.

Thanks, Barry. I tried your recommendation and it seemed to work. However, instead of a new Word document window, the hyperlink opened in a new IE window – which is what I wanted, but it is not the action you described. Or is it?

Glad that has sorted out your problem.

I am currently working with Office XP so I did not get a chance to try it out on Word 2000 for myself. The information I had on that switch was very vague in how it would operate, and only stated that it would open it in a new window. Unfortunately, it did not state whether this would be a Word window or an IE window, so I couldn’t give you that info.

Anyway, good to see that it has given you some assistance.

Mine open in IE.

What is your default action for URLs in Windows? Mine (I use Windows 2000) is:

Open

with the command line

rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l

(Look this up in Windows Explorer under Tools, Folder Options, File Types, URL, but be careful in there. )

Thanks for your suggestion, but are we on the same page? What does selecting an HTTP hyperlink in a Word 2000 document have to do with the Windows URL extension default command (Open)?

I did check my Windows Explorer folder options and found many URL descriptors, one for each protocol. I assumed you meant the URL for HTTP, of which I had two descriptors (secure and unsecure). Neither command line looked like your description so I left them alone. BTW, I am running Windows98.
