Anybody have luck upgrading from LM 21.x to LM 21.2?

Is it possible to stay at LM 21.1 or better to upgrade to LM 21.2

Sorry, no. And upgrading from 20 to 21 failed every time with me, so each time I had to put back the Linux partion image. In spite of all the Linux upgrade manuals, sniff. With this installation of v.20 I tried to be as prudent as can be, but failed eventually still. I think that the problem is somewhere in the latter encryption of my home directory; that wasn’t out of the box.
Here I must do a complete new installation to get to v.21. My v.20 is still good and safe till the support will end, I hope. Just lacking time here I am afraid.

If it was me I’d stay on 21.1 for now and maybe until support for it runs out, unless there’s some compelling new feature in the latest version. For my taste 21.2 is still too new.

I’ve never followed the upgrade instructions. Whenever I’ve gone to a new version, I’ve done a completely fresh installation. But I don’t have much specialty software, either, Just Opera and may Wine, so it works for me.

I upgraded from 21.1 to 21.2 back in July as I wanted some of the new features. No issues during or after the upgrade. I took a system image first to have something to fall back on if needed (using Macrium via a bootable USB stick that was created when I used Windows 8.1) then booted back into Mint and followed the upgrade instructions.

Then beginning of August, I decided to wipe the system and did a clean install of 21.2 not because of any issue but because there were some things that I wanted to change and standardize after my first ever install of Linux Mint 21.1 back in December 2022 as well as for the experience of installing/configuring everything again including needed software. The whole process is a lot easier and faster than a clean install of Windows.

But I digress, as DrBonzo stated there is no need to upgrade unless there is a compelling feature you want since 21.1 is still supported until April 2027.

What I’ve done over the past few years is to wait until the x.3 version comes out, and then install that.

Right now I’m running 20.3 on my daily driver and a backup test machine, and 21.1 on 2 old, decrepit machines I’m expecting to completely die at any moment. I was curious about 21.1, but I will likely wait until 21.3 comes out before I update any of my computers to it. 21.1 doesn’t seem to have anything I need or want over 20.3, and it is noticeably “heavier” than 20.3 – the old decrepit machines run it more slowly than they did 20.3, and I’m guessing that if they’re still alive when 22 comes out they will be overwhelmed by it (but they’ve had a good 14 year run, and one has an Atom processor and only 1GB RAM).

I am on 20.3.  All of my prior in-place upgrades of Linux Mint since 19 have worked flawlessly, but reading the issues on this one makes me a bit cautious.  My gut tells me this may be better as a new install, or wait for Version 22.

Recent nVidia graphics driver updates have left me with a black screen, whereas that never before was an issue.  That started back in the very early 535 driver version.  I now install graphic drivers alone after a fresh boot, and wait 15 minutes.  If necessary, I have used a hard reboot and then all was good, but it was something with that one 535 driver version that changed things.

FWIW, to me 19 and 20 seem very similar. I’ve got 21.1 running on two test machines, and to me it feels clumsier and more bloated than 19 or 20. It could be because the test machines are older (ca. 2009), but they ran 19 and 20 just fine.

I haven’t had any trouble with drivers of any kind but I suspect drivers are a case of YMMV.
