When I was growing up, my dad had to trust where I was and where I was going. We had no cell phones. Now with cell phones, not only can he track me, I

Just a reminder that sometimes apps donโ€™t know whatโ€™s best for you and you really do want โ€œalways.โ€

Just a reminder that Apple care for your privacy and ask for assurance that you still want to be tracked with ‘always’

Just a reminder that confusing messaging from vendors can lead to where daughters have to fix things.

After granting “Always” permission, iOS may periodically remind you that the app is using your location in the background for transparency

          * That’s not a bug. Its a feature ๐Ÿ™‚

Susan didn’t say it was a bug.
It is a confusing feature and one that may let your kids hide from you (or your parents). The reminder should not allow you to turn it off without permission from the tracker, without a few hoops to jump through.

            cheers, Paul

“Hey on XXX date you explicitly gave this app permission..”ย  The prompt makes it too easy to turn it off, not leave it as you intended to do in the first place.

iOS has the ‘Find My app/iCloud‘ that can track any device added to the app, even after theyโ€™ve been turned off.

Fortunalely most phone-software keep track, so I’ll never be lost,
        Isn’t it?

On iOS, sharing location through the messages app avoids this problem. You can set it to always share and it doesn’t prompt again (at least in my experience).

Not as feature packed as Life360, but also free.

Speaking of tracking…ย  Our kids are at the age where a cell phone isn’t appropriate, yet we want them to have “free range” (see free range parenting laws), to allow them some “reasonable independence, self-reliance, and problem solving-skills”.

We were looking at passive trackers, similar to all the reports we see about people tracking their lost luggage, pets, and stolen goods with AirTags.

Since we’re not part of the Apple sect, we’ve looked at tiles.ย  However, they don’t seem to have the ubiquitous coverage afforded by Apple’s “Find My” network and apparent unanimous participation (opt-in?) by Apple’s userbase.ย  From what I can find, the equivalent “all Androids except Samsung” group tile function is non-existent, and relies on 3rd party services like Life360.

Asking Perplexity about coverage and critical mass comparisons between Apple’s Find My network and Samsung’s SmartThings Find network size of 2-billion vs. 200-million.ย  With that in mind, can Android owners buy and use AirTags, and manage them via an Apple web interface, or is an Apple device required?ย  If so, what’s the most budget-friendly entry into the Apple Universe?

whatโ€™s the most budget-friendly entry into the Apple Universe?

The iPhone 16e starts at $599. Carriers have many deals that can get you a free iPhone device.
iPhone 14: Refurbished units start at around $325…

        https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished/iphone

On September Apple will announce new iPhone 17 line (with probably price hike due to tariff).

Tracking doesn’t work with AirTags connected to Android devices.
