Longer boot times after Windows reinstall

I used the no format reinstall to try and resolve a couple of issues. After the reinstall, my PC takes 30-45 seconds longer to boot than it did before. It used to boot up in 45-50 seconds. My services did not seem to change after the reinstall. I do not run a lot of apps during startup either. I have used Anvisoft Startup Booster and Soluto to try and trim this down with only limited success. The PC appears to be clean and free from malware as checked by several utilities including Malwarebytes. Any other suggestion or programs I could try to see what might be holding things up. The drive was also recently defragmented.

Loading drivers could be causing the delay and going into msconfig and under the Boot tab, check Boot log and OS boot information – Apply – OK and restart.

You will see the drivers loading on screen and if there’s a delay with any compared to the rest.

The Boot Log text (ntbtlog) can be located in Windows C:Windowsntbtlog – double clicking on that will open it in Notepad.

Don’t forget to uncheck those items on the reboot.

It’s possible the reinstall could have left a large number of files in the Temp folder which you can delete and can check by going Start – type %temp% then press enter – and running Disk Cleanup as an admin could also help.

If either results in cleaning out a substantial number of files then another defrag won’t go amiss.

Thanks for the reply. I did not see anything holding up during the visible part of the log. I use Ccleaner regularly and occasionally run disk cleanup so that is not the issue. I found something where you can look at boot times in event viewer so I am going to try that later.

Do you have network devices or mapped folders to which you automatically connect that are not available when you boot?

Do you have external USB drives attached when you boot?

Just a standard desktop single user PC only hooked up to a cable modem. Occasionally I patch in a router when someone wants to use a laptop while visiting. No other USB devices connected during boot.

I seem to remember something that would monitor boot and list the times it took for each device to load, but cannot remember the name of it.

The boot log file mentioned by Sudo15 in post #2 should show you the times.

I have run the bootlog test twice now since the post by Sudo15 and nowhere in ntbtlog.txt can I find any load times.

The ntbtlog.txt only shows what has and hasn’t been loaded, although it can show it trying to load a driver twice with one of them failing because the driver has already been loaded, or it has been successful on the second attempt.

Follow the steps that you found to view the loading times in Event Viewer then click on the Details tab.

This lists the times in ms for each item loaded, but you would need something to compare them with – such as another computer that doesn’t take so long.

If this is a home build then go to the motherboard support site and reinstall the drivers if no updates are there for your existing ones and start with the Chipset then Video.

If it’s an OEM build then go to the computer vendor support site and do the same.

Network drivers are probably best got from the adapter manufacturer’s site.
