Looking for new e-mail service

After many years with the same email address, I am now faced with having to find a new email service and address. I was wondering if anyone could make a recommendation.

Here’s what I will need:

[*]Single email account – I don’t have my own domain.
[*]2 GB of storage space.
[*]Paid, not free, service.
[*]Someone who will likely be around for a long time.
[*]imap

I have recently heard that imap is less secure than pop3. I have also heard that imap is more secure than pop3. Does anyone have any thoughts about that? I would much prefer imap, due to the fact that all my email stays on the server, rather than being offloaded to my computer.

There are other plans available with Office 365 too.

I checked out the Office 365 preview. It is very appealing that you get all of the apps along with your email service, and that all of your email goes with you wherever you go.

Take a look at what GoDaddy offers. I use them a lot and have many people with whom I’ve consulted using them also. Their email works whether you access and use them through a browser or whether you bring it in with something like Thunderbird. The absolute best part of what they have to offer is their American based and native English speaking help. It is a joyful experience to talk with them on the phone. They will get any issues solved and help you and they’ll be very polite about it. Best of any tech support from any vendor of all I have used.

Sorry, but the Office 365 Home Premium Preview does not include hosted email, does it? Or did you mean one the Office 365 plans?

Not sure how you feel about having it hosted by Microsoft, but for $4/month and 25 GB storage, it does seem a good deal – check the Hosted Email plan.

I want to stay away from companies like Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, etc., who will be harvesting and selling my information.

An example of someone who I wouldn’t mind going with would be Rackspace. They make all of their money from selling their services to their customers, and none from harvesting their customers’ information. However, Rackspace doesn’t sell individual email accounts. Nor do they sell single accounts to those who have their own domain.

I may end up getting my own domain, so that in the future, I don’t have to ever change my email address.

Why don’t you buy your own domain? Like that you will always own the email address(es) and domain, regardless of where you host them. Even if the host goes bust, you can just move your stuff elsewhere and the email addresses will still be valid. It will cost you just a few dollars a year to get your own domain (I have mine).

But you’re probably right. Doing so will mean only going once through the arduous process of changing my email address with everyone.

That’s right up my alley (being in control of the situation), and that’s exactly what I would advise everyone else to do.

Not doing so would be penny-wise and pound-foolish.

Much cheaper in the long run, if you consider the fact that your troubles are over, once you go through the process one time.

I decided to get my own domain and have it hosted by Dotster.

The prices weren’t bad, and best of all, I’ve dealt with Dotster before, and they have ALWAYS given superb customer service.

My email is having a bit of a problem right now — I can’t log into their web mail client. (Imap with Outlook has been working fine.) But they spent about an hour last night working on it (with me on hold), and they then passed it up the line. Hopefully that will be resolved by tonight when I get home.

A final note: Dotster has decent prices, and they meet all of the requirements that I mentioned in the original posting. However, there are a couple of negatives:

1. They recently switched to a new webmail client. The new client doesn’t currently allow you to set any rules for what to do with incoming email, other than spam filtering. Supposedly they’re working on implementing this functionality. In the meantime, I will need to set rules in Outlook. (I’d much prefer to set my rules on the server side rather than on the client side.)

2. Anytime you need to call tech support, plan on spending about an hour on the phone. Much of that time will be on hold, waiting for a technician. However, the rest of that time will be all of the time that the tech spends with you. In other words, if you can hang on long enough to get a tech, they will give you as much time as you need.

I can highly recommend FastMail.FM. I have used them for quite a few years and they are unusually informative with their system status information. The owners of the service are technical people who frequently answer questions on the forum that supports their services. They have lots of services that I do not use and they own more than 100 domain names so you have a wide variety of names to choose from when you create your visible email address. I believe they also host others domains but I’m not certain about that. I pay about $24 per year for my level of service. They do have imap as well as POP3. Even though there domain name implies some other country they are Australian and their primary servers are in New York City.
