They are still the same version from 2017/02/10, and they were supposed to be changed to recommended on the “canceled” patch tuesday

These updates are all digitally signed on February 3, 2017, and are bitwise unchanged from those first made available on February 9, 2017.

I just got “INTEL – System – 10/3/2016 12:00:00AM – 10.1.1.38” dated as being published on 12/27/2016. I already hid this when it first happened in January, so this is a second appearance.

Intel has a KB saying that there is a “fixed” version of it, because the previous one was breaking previously installed SMBus Controller Driver on certain motherboards.
It is possible that now Microsoft has published the Intel updated version.
If it does not come as at least Recommended and ticked, I would keep it under observation for now and install the Intel version only if it is strictly required to fix anything.
If there is a previously installed Chipset Driver version and working, there is no need to update, with a single exception (for a production machine).
That exception is if there is any intention in the near future to do an upgrade in place from Windows 7/8.1 to Windows 10, because this newer Chipset version might support better such an upgrade.

I’ve been also getting “Intel – SYSTEM” driver updates on my family’s Dell Inspiron 620 desktop PC using Win7 x64 edition lately. I’ve immediately hid them after doing Windows Update scans on there, since they currently seem to be “Optional”. Seems to apply to those using minimum Sandy Bridge series or later Intel chipsets. The Dell computer uses Intel Sandy Bridge hardware.

Yes, it is offered on Sandy Bridge and higher, but at least the previous version was offered on Ivy Bridge chipsets where it was not fully compatible. I think those chipsets had the SMBus Controller Driver issue and for those chipsets the latest version 9 of the Chipset Driver is the most suitable.
Sandy Bridge seems to be covered well, although it is an earlier chipset than Ivy Bridge.

The one I’m seeing is not KB2952664 on my Win7. I’m seeing KB2976978 on Win8.1 with today’s release date, not 2/17

See my other post about the description. The descriptions indicate exactly a metadata change, but it is not so visible to me in what sense. There is no visible supersedence involved at the WU level.
Those 2 (or 4) patches have been published before and hidden from view since last Tuesday until today. They were never expired in the true sense, just hidden. I am wondering if they were those updates holding the main releases from the last 7-8 days? It is unlikely, but if this is not the case, it shows that WU/MU is well and alive, but that Microsoft works to something bigger behind the scenes and this has certainly something to do with the big rollups promised for March for Windows 7/2008 R2 and 8.1/2012 R2. It is also possible that there are preparations made for the Windows 10 Creators Edition and the new delivery mechanisms.
We may even see a recommended patch implementing Delivery Optimization in Windows 7/8.1 to support the new releases?
Windows Server 2016 does not have DO implemented and I don’t know if this is planned to be implemented or not.

Using MU on Win8.1. Unchecked optional with today’s pub date. Staging for move to checked recommended next Patch day as abbodi86 says. Change may be only metadata.

Confirmed, it is true Optional on Windows 7, not Recommended and it is unchecked by default (which is normal for all true Optional updates).

There have been no other patches released or revised today other than KB2976798 and KB2952664, both in 32-bit and 64-bit, for the products which we follow, i.e. Windows 7, 2008 R2, 8.1, 2012 R2, 10 (all versions) or 2016.

or as early as Feb. 28, Mar. 1 or Mar. 7 for the new flash updates for win8.1/win10 (if not in late afternoon or early evening of Feb. 21).

But the KB2952664 update for Win7 and the KB2976978 update for Win8.1 are “bitwise” the same ones first published earlier this February as I’ve manually downloaded & checked myself thru MS update catalog.

Using Windows Update on a Windows 7 computer that never had previous versions of KB2952664 installed, KB2952664 appears as an optional unchecked update with a Published date of “Today”.

The 4 patches have been revised previously on February. 10 and again on February, 22.
The description for the latest revision says: “Information has changed about how to install the update files.”
The files date is unchanged, it shows as February, 3.
Being Australian time, it is possible that all dates show 1 day before on the US time computers.

May or may not be related: I am running Win7 with WU disabled and have been running the GWX Control Panel as a precaution. Yesterday it claimed it detected Win10 files and shut down the system. I rebooted it and it has not complained again.

Any ideas?

I know of “GWX Control Panel” but I know nothing about it…. Sounds strange but you got me. If I recommended anything I would always recommend ‘Steve Gibson’s’Solution because I trust him so much BUT I never used that neither.

You see before anybody did these packages, I was adjusting my register to control it. If you want I can post my Reg Scripts but I have always considered that all over, hahaha However I never took out the Registry adjustment that worked and contained it in the end. Go Figure…. 😛

Well, it’s not the first time this happened, but I could not find any trace of a possible cause. The question is with WU disabled can this be something real? If not, these may be flukes, but given MS behavior I cannot assume that. And the question is what can cause the flukes?

Anybody technical enough has some ideas?

Yes…….. I know he can be busy tied up with his other activities including work in the real world………. but he does try to get back eventually.    And of course things have sort of settled at the moment…..but he was even I thought talking of another big update even after the so called cut off time MS set last year.    His programme GWX Control Panel I feel has more to offer than the other Never 10….. which doesn’t run all the time……. only when you open it… whereas GWX CP is constantly monitoring things for you.   I trust Josh and his programme!  Oh! and I think from memory he has said on his blog that he takes an active interest in the current situation with MS and should things go the way they did before he will be preparing to fight that himself.    Actually he reminds me v. much of Noel Carboni……… as the reason he wrote his programme was to stop the march of Win10 on his own machines.   LT

For some reason, I didn’t get KB 2967978; maybe it’s because I accidentally downloaded it when I reset my PC in the sea of 100+ updates?  I got it the last two times it came out though.

Look under installed updates (Control Panel\Windows Updates in the lower left corner). It’s easier if you sort be name (click on the title bar of the description column). It will be in KB numerical order under “Updates for Windows.”

Has not ever installed, and will not, install these cr*ppy “updates”.

And yeah, the GWX compaign in the current form is over, but who is to say that Microsoft will not initiate something similar or even worse later for Windows 7 and 8.1 users? I am not so sure about that.

I certainly wouldn’t choose to install KB2976978 myself and it WILL be hidden when, in some weeks, I get around to checking for updates again. Just the fact that it’s NOT inside a cumulative bundle tells us that it’s not necessary to run Windows.

They can SAY “It has no GWX” and all they’d have to do is use a different acronym for whatever pushes Win 10 next. Or just lie outright (which would be almost the same thing).

Their business model crumbles if the whole world doesn’t switch to Win 10 and start developing Apps at a feverish pace, so as to stock their store with Good Things (that they can make 30% profit off of). But IMO that’s already failed – the world of developers who could be interested in making Apps seems to be a different bunch than those who were interested in making useful Win32 applications.

I have WU set to check for updates but allow me to choose whether to download and install, and this morning I received 2 new updates.  The first is the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 – February 2017 (KB890830), and the second is a rather large 16MB MSE definitions update. Receiving an MSE definitions update that large is not the norm. For the most part they’re usually under 1MB.
