I’m afraid you’re in a position where you are trying to make sense out of what is fast becoming an absurdity. You may have to consider how to deploy your desire to help in a context where it is possible to be productive.

The first thought I had when reading this was, did they just rename the monthly preview patches (understanding they say its only new non-security patches).

And by the way, if its said these patches will contain only new non-security patches, how then can it be cumulative? Cumulative contains new and old, right?

I swear, they’re trying to overly complicate the simplest of tasks, in hopes of confusing everyone enough to just throwing in the towel and becoming unwilling unpaid beta testers. MS doesn’t seem to care about the OS market anymore even though they have the crown to lose.

That’s what I thought (see my comment on Technet) but why do they keep the Preview ring?

There’s also the inconsistency – are they cumulative or not? If so, do they include older security patches?

It seems like they’re just giving a new name to the regular, old, everyday non-Patch-Tuesday cumulative updates. Or am I missing something?

No, you are not missing anything

as for cumulativity, both security/2nd tues. and update/4th tues. should be cumulative and include each other fixes respectively

They look like hotfixes from the description on Technet and also from the description of the update. Not mandatory, but resolving earlier some issues affecting some users and systems.
The main patches and the only patches normally required for Windows 10 are those released on the regular Patch Tuesday.
I noticed an inconsistency though for today’s patch in Michael Nieuhaus’ article.
It is said that the out of band releases are to be considered Updates in WSUS (which in the old classification normally means Recommended, or rarely Optional), while the current one is classified as Critical Update. Still an update, but an Important one, vs Recommended.
I am aware of Microsoft’s intentions to merge Recommended and less so Optional into Critical Updates, but it adds to the already too much confusion surrounding Windows Updates, unless explained officially.

I suspect by the time Win7 goes away we won’t have to worry about Windows Updates OR official explanations. You login to Windows Cloud and you-get-what-you-get. Microsoft becomes the IT Department. And those of you in IT now become the grunts that swap out computers when they die and keep the network infrastructure connected. And the company you work for rents the OS environment as needed.

Short rant.

I’m with zero2dash. Either MS is being deliberately being obvuscating/obvuscative, is that even a word ?, or they have NO idea what they’re doing and are making it up as they go along.

I still haven’t worked out what their plan is, if any !
