I am being driven mad by lop.com

This is a “Search the Web” site that installs itself as my homepage and sets up a series of tabs below the existing toolbars. I have run the uninstall program that is linked to the site and reset my homepage etc., but it comes back. I’ve run adaware and it still comes back. It seems to occur when my better half is using the PC and she spends 99% of her time on eBay with very little else.

In addition to the changes to my home page, I have also found icons on the desktop for “Casino Online”, “Internet”, “Poker”, “Printer Cartridges”, “Travel” and “Website Hosting”. In addition to these icons, it also installs (sometimes) a bar that appears above the task bar at the bottom of the screen with the same icons plus a search input box. This pseudo task bar looks the goods but can’t be moved or resized and exhibits no properties when I right click. It closes when I click on the red ‘X’ but returns when I reopen IE.

None of this appears to be causing any problems but it is very, very annoying.

PS. She who must be obeyed assures me that she NEVER clicks on any pop ups etc.,

Take a look at KenK’s Anti Adware / Spyware / Hijack. It has links to several tools that detect and remove malware such as lop.com. I recommend that you install at least AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy. SpywareBlaster is another useful tool – it keeps a lot of malware out the door.
