• Lost the Sort and Group Dialog Box

Access 97 locked up, and when I went back in, the sort and group dialog box had moved itself off the viewable screen. There was an article on this a while ago, but I’m not finding it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I can vaguely remember the article but not the details. However, here are a couple of suggestions that may work. Try increasing the resolution of the desktop then, when you find it, repositioning the dialog so that it is available in a lower resolution.

Alternatively, Click on the Sorting and Grouping button press ALT then release it then press M. This opens the Control Menu for the dialog box and selects the move option. Using the cursor arrows will move the dialog box around the screen.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried a higher resolution, but didn’t find it. I also tried AltM-move, but I don’t think the “sort/group” box has that control.

I think that the suggestion was to change a registry setting, but I don’t know which one.

I think your right – it may be more complicated than I thought. I’ve searched through my old Woody’s and haven’t found anything.

The Sorting and Grouping dialog does have a control menu – it’s just not very apparent until you deselect the dialog. It comes in the form of the Sorting and Grouping symbol on the left of the dialog Title Bar…not that that helps much.
ALT followed separately by M should work (maybe try it when you finally get your dialog box back!) but I think the problem goes deeper. Now I’m desparately trying to remember the article but I can here the pillow beckoning…

…but not until one last search. Find in Outlook appears to ignore HTML e-mails which is why nothing came up. A manual search revealed Woody’s Access Watch 2.22 with the answer(s). The 2 I mentioned were there plus the following text:

First, back up the Registry in case anything goes wrong. Then run RegEdit, and under the key HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice8.0AccessSettings find the entry for ‘SGST’. It is a string of semicolon-delimited numbers. Change the second and third numbers to 0, so that it reads something like: 1;0;0;435;278. Close and restart Access, and the Sorting/Grouping dialog should now be visible.

Also there was a reference to KB article Q200412.

          Hope all of this helps.
