My spouse HAS to use a Mac because of work requirements. He is frustrated with the G4 iBook and cannot get satisfactory assistance from the techs at work. Does anyone recommend diagnostic software that I can use to try to figure out why the computer is slow, freezing, etc.? I know NOTHING about Macs, and spent hours, yesterday, googling this topic. I’m quite frustrated.

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerOctober 9, 2007 at 7:09 pm #1078758Dear frustrated,
Sorry to hear that your spouse is having problems with his iBook. While I can’t recommend anything for your particular problem can I suggest you try the Apple support site? Lots of willing people with lots more Mac knowledge than me to help you out. Another user-friendly site is http://www.macfixit.com[/url%5D.Good luck

First, my appologies for appearing to hijack this post – this is NOT my intention.
As I am not an Apple user, I tend to stay clear of these questions – but since seeing this question, I need your opinion on a couple of sites and thought I would add to this post since it seems to dovetail nicely into the original question.
Quick background, I have a user who uses MAC’s for everything at home and at his work. Since he is the Owner, President and chief bottle washer, he pretty much does what he rightly wants. He recently upgraded all of his computers to the newest version of OS X.
Here is the question: He claims the best sites for OS X information and forums in addition to Apple site you mentioned are:
OS X FAQ with their OS X Forums.
AppleSscore.Com – Free and premium services provided.
Have you any dealings with these and/or what have you heard ?
I have to work the hardware side of his computers but occasionally need other information and would like to concentrate on one site other than Apple Support rather than severl. I forwarded your recommendation for MAC FixIt.Com to him as well.
I realize there are numerous sites and can come down to a users preference, in this case, I will have some input and would like to steer towards a good quality site – always keeping Woody’s Lounge as the front runner for my searches and questions I can not solve.
Thanks in advance for any insite you can provide.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 12, 2007 at 9:01 am #1078866Hi Scott
Thanks for the links … I haven’t personally seen or used either OS X FAQ, or Applescore. I’m not shy to admit that I haven’t had any hardware problems with my current (or my last) Mac – the only challenges that I have, from time to time, is upgrading the OS and other Apple Software – and MacFixIt is a wonderful tool to help me. Now whenever I see a software upgrade from Apple I check their site to see the experiences of other users. A couple of times the information there has encouraged me to wait a couple of weeks until a ‘corrected’ version of the upgrade is on-line. I like their site so much I’ve paid for the ‘pro’ version – which gives me a few extras but (more importantly) also helps them keep doing what they do.
