AskWoody PlusJune 6, 2023 at 11:41 am #2564307These are the macOS Sonoma features that arenโt available to Intel Macs
…Hereโs a rundown of the new features in macOS Sonoma that are only available to Apple Silicon users, not users with an Intel-powered Mac.
Presenter Overlay: Keeps you part of the conversation when sharing your screen. Choose from two overlays, large and small. The large overlay keeps the spotlight on you, with your screen framed next to you on a separate layer. You can move, walk, and talk in front of your content.
React with your hands: Add a reaction that fills the camera frame with fun 3D augmented reality effects like hearts, confetti, fireworks, and more. And you can share a reaction with just a hand gesture.
Available when using the built-in camera on Mac computers with Apple silicon, or any Mac when using Continuity Camera with iPhone 12 and later.Game Mode automatically gives games top priority on the CPU and GPU of your Mac, lowering usage for background tasks. And it dramatically reduces latency with wireless accessories, like AirPods and your favorite controllers, for responsiveness you can feel.
Available on Mac computers with Apple silicon. Compatible game controllers work with selected games and are sold separately.Siri: Siri now works when you just say โSiriโ as well as โHey Siri.โ
Available in English (Australia, Canada, Great Britain, U.S.) on Mac computers with Apple silicon and on AirPods Pro (2nd generation)… -

AskWoody LoungerJune 6, 2023 at 5:16 pm #2564353Interesting that they didnt, as was widely rumoured, exclude all but the T2 equipped Intel Macs. Probably next time, then after end of support bar 3 years for Intel Macs if they stay true to form and not like the debacle as happened when they didtched th “Power PC” or Motorola line of chips.
So its a safe bet that all the various models of Mac 2012 and after will be able to run Sonoma with varying degrees of success through the auspices of OCLP although owners of the infamous “Trash Can” Mac Pro circa 2013 or 6,1 and earlier may have problems due to the AVX 1 and 2 issue, #2 support being hard to attain.
Most Mac models prior to 2012 dont seem to have the “Metal” Graphics, so while its possible with OCLP I am lead to believe its not easy. heres the link below:
https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/MODELS.html
Theres a new interace and its got easier to use, as of 0.6.6. Probably a good idea not to run out and get it yet as Sonoma just hit the Streets in Beta, but OS Ventura, Monterey and Big Sur are all viable.
If your Machine is out of support or you dont want to stay with MacOS, then Windows 10-11 is always an option as is Linux for old Macs out of support, and it runs well, Win11 caveats apply for installation. Apple support (Bootcamp drivers etc) post install is availble via GitHub Brigadierย util. should you choose that route or manual install of Win10-11.
(Please note Bigadier requires some cmd prompt work to download and needs a windows machine, Bootcamp drivers best installed on Win11 on pre 22H2 versions before any connection to the internet and\or installation i.e. net off, Win10 is fine better install Bootcamp Drivers first and if your really adventurous installing\injecting Drivers is possible using DISM and the /recurse switch)

AskWoody PlusAugust 16, 2023 at 4:19 am #2581299macOS Sonoma Simplifies Restoring a Mac in DFU Mod
With the macOS Sonoma update that’s coming this fall, Apple is making it simpler to revive or restore a Mac that is stuck in DFU mode. With the new software, you can initiate a Mac-to-Mac restoration process right from the Finder app.
In macOS Ventura and earlier, reviving or restoring a Mac requires a second Mac that has the Apple Configurator app installed, but in โmacOS Sonomaโ, Apple Configurator is no longer required…

“New in macOS Sonoma: You can now use one Mac to revive or restore another Mac that’s in DFU mode right from Finder.
Previously you needed to install Apple Configurator to do this but now it’s built in!
Accidentally stumbled upon this while playing around with some stuff.”

AskWoody PlusMarch 25, 2024 at 5:35 pm #2653495This is my first Apple computer so I am starting entirely new and am open to any insights and input whatsoever. I just purchased a new iMac 24″ with 512GB drive and M1 chip. It has Ventura 13.2.1 on it and is offering me an upgrade to Sonoma 14.4.1. I purchased it through Costco for a very good price but now see that it is a few years old. I’m OK with that since I use my machines lightly and am just getting tired of dealing with Microsoft. Still have a good Windows 10 machine to rely on.ย I appreciate any positive and especially negative thoughts on installing and operating on Sonoma. Also, any thoughts on add on security products are welcome and whether I should run it through my paid Proton system VPN. Thanks much.

Go to the Mac Forum’s oldest Topics here. There are a number of basics Topics (6-10 maybe) I did a number of years ago. They are old, but will show you how to set up Finder similar to Win File Explorer. You can run many of the programs you are used to in Windows – I run the ARM version of Firefox, Waterfox, Thunderbird, Adobe Reader, Libre Office (I’m not a fan of MS Office, though you can run that too), Kindle, VLC Player, Parallels (if you need VMs), and others. Rosetta is also available to help with compatibility. If you have any questions, start a Topic in the Apple Forum for help.

AskWoody PlusMarch 25, 2024 at 6:11 pm #2653510I did notice the posts you refer to and was planning to get to them tonight.ย So, are you saying I should have gone to the Forum to post any questions that I ask? I posted it where I did because the topic seemed the same and was logical to my analog mind. I just want to make sure I get it correct on my next visit. As you can see from my stats, I do not get on here very often. I appreciate your knowledge and willingness to share it.
