Macrium reflect 8 Free:

.xml corrupted?

Updated to v8.0.7783 (Uefi) on May 1/2024.

I use a WD passport ext hard drive to do so, always offline. (to note, my backups are at ‘root’ of E drive, not in folders) fwiw.

All went well, could backup using My Backups(2).xml. Dec-June 2 (before and after May/24 updates, no June yet).

TODAY:I plug in my ‘M/R only wd passport’, and My latest E:drive M/R backups do NOT show up at all.
In fact all that shows as the date of my other .xml’s are older ones (2022) in windows explorer under “reflect folder”?

PS I tested May and June 2024 image access via orig MR rescue usb created in Dec in windows (bios) after updating M/R May 1st, and all was well, all images showed up.They also showed up in M/R program itself so I could restore.

NOW/TODAY:In trying to do a backup before June CU updates, my Last 5 months of backups aren’t accessible (E:/drive)in MR program, YET if I go into ‘Logs” tab, it clearly shows ‘My Backup(2).xml’ created a Full Image June 2, 2024. Where is it?
Current Status: Can’t see back ups in that xml location; lost all backups from 2023 on in that .xml (nothing showing up, red X), can’t create new one from that .xml?

Note: when I check M/R logs, it shows ALL my backups from June and before as “succesfull”, and shows the Image ID, Filename and completion message?? Yet none are showing up on my MR as E: drive now (red circle X) and none available in “Windows > File Explorer>Reflect” folder. All just old 2022 .xml names.

Pls help, am trying to make one before doing June CU updates. Any ideas, anyone?

PS I was online with M/R & drive for first time today to see if it made a difference. It did not.

Here is what I see from attempting my back up today- no access to past nor now:

Here’s what I see under logs from June 2-success. Equals where are my back ups now??

Does this have anything to do with it? Microsoft & ‘security” errors under MR “events??

XML files are details of the backup, not the backup itself.

Open Windows Explorer and browse the WD external disk. You should see a bunch of large files with random character names. These are the backup files. If you browse to them in MR you can mount / restore from them.

p.s. I like to use folder names for my backups as I do image and data backups.

Eliminate tiny possibility there are issues with your backup drive.  Suggest running command window “chkdsk /f” on your WD passport.

TY, but via admin command? What would be the exact command prompt to have it only do the Passport E:/ drive pls?

Note: In MR, my ext hard drive WD shows suddenly in RED, even though it has deleted ” if it needs space” in the past.

Did MR delete ALL of my 2024 b/ups? Worried. But checked, and all ok June.

Last month it simply told me “we deleted  xyz  as per it’s schedule to make room”. Lots of room after that. Did not think it would delete ALL of 2024?? Here’s what showed up today, D vs E? (I have no D, only E for MR).

And then showing E vs D (No D is MR!) as red:

@Paul T and all AW: Sorry, here is my cuffufle of MR 8 Free .xmls, on root of E: drive (on PC now). In 2023, I switched to new wd passport back up drive. Same time MR was updating their program. Every time I made new b/up, it changed .xml. All under control as of late 2023 until now, using only one .xml = My backups(2).

(Had MR free since early 2022, started with ver.7 I believe). I have the “free” license via belarc – should I find a MR 8 Free download, unisntall and start all over? Or assume my wd drive bought & used for MR is failing? Then how to switch to new ext hard drive? Thanks all!

Does anyone know why my M/R Reflect folder .xml files are now Microsoft Edge html (as shown here, right above this post)? Are they not supposed to be ‘Macrium Reflect’ as file type?

They are not “Edge files.”
In the Settings App on your computer, MS Edge is the default app to open .xml files. So they show the Edge icon.
On my computer, the default app to open .xml is Firefox, my default browser. So they show the Firefox icon.
If you open up the Definition Files from within Macrium Reflect, they will show you your definition settings within the M/R GUI like you are used to.

It is with extreme & utter embarrassment that I mark this Resolved. In my always trepidatious ‘pre-windows update day’ tizzy, I grabbed the wrong older M/R backup drive.

I extend exorbitant gratitude to @Paul T @TechTango for your kind timely assistance, and sincerely apologize for wasting your precious time. I’ll glue my hair back on, and proceed with windows updates, as I have that always important backup now in place. What more can a Cdn say today, eh?:)
