I am trying to help out a friend regarding creating an image backup.
We loaded Macrium Reflect Free on his computer.
We first tried to make a bootable rescue media (CD).

However, upon doing so, it seemed to take forever. It first went to 10% rather quickly. 20 minutes later it was at 11%. After another 7 minutes or so, with no apparent progress, we shut it down. We will try again at a later time.

My question: how long should it take to create such a boot disk? (Perhaps I didn’t wait long enough)

The last one I created took about 5 minutes – I think.
Maybe your CD writer is unwell, check that you can write lots of files to a CD.
Do you have a 1GB USB? Try using that.

      cheers, Paul

      Compiler,

On the first attempt with the Free Version MR has to download the Windows PE software which is a considerable download! Of course, this only applies if you selected this option, the preferred option IMHO, over the Linux boot disk. HTH

        Greek:
        Yes, I did select that.
But, why would it stay at 10% and then 11% for so long?

When I try again, will it know to d/l PE again?
        Guess I’ll find out.

Try the Linux boot CD first to eliminate the download as the issue.

Do a search here in the forums for “macruim boot disk”, Windows PE Macrium boot disk”, or Macrium Linux boot disk”.
I have a full fledge article with links on MR boot disk creation, if I remember, I’ll provide a link to it, at the moment I’m at work.

The latest version (6.xx) of Macrium Free has two levels of recovery. The base level, as discussed above, is to create a bootable recovery disk. You boot from that, and when it comes up it will find your image backups (assuming they exist, of course), and you can select one to restore.

But you would only need to use the boot disk if your system is otherwise unbootable. Where your system will boot, but for some reason (such as a failed software install) you wish to restore an earlier image, Macrium now adds a boot time option. Effectively it is a dual boot, where you can boot either into Windows as normal (the default), or into the Macrium recovery. If you take this latter option, it’s the same as if you had booted from the recovery disk. You can set this up from within Reflect: Other Tasks > Add Recovery Boot Menu Option. I have used this to restore an image, and it works perfectly.

Yes. I was very pleased to see that feature in Reflect (Free) 6.0!
