mail merge from outlook failure (ol2k imo, win 98)

up till last week, outlook mail merge worked fine.
however, late last week my client had some problems connecting to the network which were subsequently fixed. But, now when mail merge is invoked, she gets the following messages:
“Initializing Microsoft Word” (which is normal) followed by “The operation failed due to network or other communications problems. Check your connections and try again.”
The outlook contacts and Word application are on the C drive.
