MailTo: links in Chrome, Firefox, & IE fail to open my email client (Eudora) like they did up to a month or two ago.

When I click on a MailTo: link in Chrome v.16.0.912.77m, it does nothing at all. Absolutely nothing, as if I had not clicked anything.

In Firefox v.10 & 12, it opens my default browser (Chrome) in a new window, and opens my default home page, but no email client at all.

In IE v.9.0.8112, it acts exactly like FF.

Until recently, MailTo: links always opened Eudora and filled in the To: field properly. I have not (knowingly) changed anything in my Eudora settings. I may have changed some settings in my Gmail and Hotmail accounts, but can’t remember if any of those might have had any effect on Eudora.

    My system parameters:

OS: Windows 7 (Home Premium) Service Pack 1; v.6.1.7601.17727
    CPU: Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
    MEM: 4 x 1024 MB = 4 GB (DDR2)
STO: 1.4 TB total; Over 300 GB free on Internal and 100 GB free on External HDDs

Thanks for the tip, but that leads to the Control Panel>Default Programs > Set Associations > scroll down to Protocols > Mailto sequence.
On my computer, the default is Chrome, and the choices given for choosing a new default mail client are only Chrome and Outlook, and Eudora is not mentioned (nor are Hotmail/WinLive or Gmail). There is no provision for filling in your own personal choice. I don’t have the installation file for Eudora — its directories and executables were just copied into my new computer from the old computer years ago. So I suppose Win7 has no system “knowledge” of its existence. It ran fine that way for years. What to do?

      Latest news:
I don’t recommend this for everyone, but I located a Registry key that listed Chrome as the default mailto client

      [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellAssociationsUrlAssociationsmailtoUserChoice]”Progid”=”ChromeHTML”

      and deleted the “ChromeHTML”.
Now my system works fine, just like it used to. Eudora opens properly when I click on a Mailto: link in any browser.
(I did take the precaution of saving the appropriate Registry section before performing surgery, just in case it broke something.)

We’ll see how long the cure lasts….
