Make Text More Readable with Windows ClearType Text Tuner

    What

Instructions of how to utilize Windows ClearType Text Tuner to make text that displays on your LCD screen sharper, clearer, and thus making it easier to read.  The ClearType Text Tuner is installed with nearly all versions of Windows 10 and 11.

    Why

LCD screens of laptops, tablets, and flat panel monitors utilizes the pixel method of displaying text which is not as sharp and clear as printed text.  The ClearType Text Tuner will adjust the components of each pixel and let you decide which adjustment looks best on your screen.  The tuning process takes 2 – 3 minutes and you are rewarded with easier to read text on your screen.

    How

    • Open a Run box (WinKey +R), enter cttune and press the Enter key. This will open the ClearType Text Tuner.
    • The box next to Turn on ClearType should already be checked, if not then check it. Click the Next button to go to the next page.
    • Windows will check your monitor to see if it is set to its native resolution. If the monitor is set to native resolution click Next button.  If the monitor is not set to native resolution Windows will ask if you want to keep the resolution you have or switch back to the native resolution.  ClearType needs to tune on the resolution that you will be using.
    • If you have more than one monitor Windows will let you decide which monitor(s) to tune with ClearType.
    • After the above entries you will be presented with 5 pages of blocks of the same text. On each page select the block of text that looks best and click the Next button.
    • The last page says you have finished tuning your monitor. Click the Finish button and you are done.

    Side Tip:
If you have trouble telling the slight differences of which block of text looks better, use the magnify app in Windows (enter magnify in a Run box) for a closer look.

Feedback on Windows ClearType Text Tuner

I’d forgotten all about the Clear Type settings.  My desktop runs four 27″ 1080p screens 2 over 2.

I ran through the ClearType Text Tuner process on all 4 screens and used the windows Magnifier for a close up look one each screen one at a time yesterday.

After booting up today & over the course of a couple of hours realized fine tuning with Clear Type DID make a positive improvement.  It was a pleasant surprise.  Magnifier was the key.  It was a bit tedious, but well worth it.

        @TechTango – four screens! I bow before your magnificence! I’ve a mere two. 😉

I chuckled.  Truth?  In many ways 4 screens are overkill.  It was a bucket list project.  Was it worth it?  Yes, one time.  I have enjoyed them, but would I do it again?  No.

Have you run the Display Color Calibrator for those monitors.  Each monitor has to be calibrated separately.  Enter dccw in the Run box to bring up the Color Display Calibration screen and follow the on screen instructions.

Side Tip: Don’t use the Magnifier with color calibration.

More tips to follow as I go thru my files.
