From the Zip Guy.
Free PDF is a utility which allows you to create PDFs
just by printing to a “Create PDF” printer,
from any Windows 9x/ME application FOR FREE!
I love this thing. Works like a charm, there is one drawback, the install and configuration is a bit of pain (requires download and install of three separate programs) but once it’s installed it’s a treat. Haven’t found any problems with it yet. Check it out here

Just wondering if you have an uptodate URL for this fellow’s software? The linked URL is giving wonderful 404 errors sad.

If you want an alternative, I’ve used Cute PDF and PDF995 on simple conversions entirely successfully!

Thanks John, I’ll search these out.

…. or you could buy a Mac Mini. OS X has PDF writer built in to every Print dialogue. evilgrin – But you knew that, didn’t you!

          • #924759

Yeah yeah.. I knew that. I also know that various distributions of Linux include this feature too grin.

However, I’m looking for an option at work on a Windows box, as that is the platform of (their) choice.

ZipGuy appears to be off the air. Here’s a few mostly freeware alternatives:

          Thanks Alan grin.

I’ve tried the CutePDF Writer that John suggested, and it appears (so far) to do what we need, and as a bonus, it even says it’s free for commercial use grin.

But unless I missed something, his program supports only Windows 98 and ME…

I gave up on the program, the forum gives advice on how to install on NT type OS’s (XP etc) I now use JAWS

          • #924855

I like JAWS too, especially the way it integrates so well with Word e.g. makes the PDF TOC from the Heading outline structure of the DOC. I heard somewhere that they were offering some older versions 4 free. ???

You have to be careful; you get the correct JAWS / Jaws!

This JAWS is a screen reader/talker for visually impaired persons, and costs either

            • #924872

I remember now, I got my copy of Jaws free from a magazine CD, after the older freeware version (5D-PDF) wouldn’t work with Office 2000 I think. I tried to get it online, but ended up with JAWS instead, because I couldn’t read the screen properly. Once I had JAWS, I was able to see what I was doing and realized my mistake. Then I was able to obtain Jaws, as originally planned.

              A modern-day “Pilgrim’s Progress”, but without the bunions…!

Thanks for the correction re: jaws. The latest version has many fixes and when purchased with the editor makes it a rival for Adobe. I still use Office Pro 97 and it integrates with that without problem. The old problem of having the prompt to save normal.dot on exiting word has been solved. I will stick with this product.

If you want to make pdf’s from Word-doc’s only and without any free/shareware, this might be worth looking at too: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/wordhks/chapter/hack23.pdf%5B/url%5D

Thanks for the info, hasse. I didn’t know about this WordGhost plugin. I did manage with CutePDF, but it wouldn’t do hyperlinks & stuff.

              thankyou

        • #924808

I tried a few of the free PDF creator programs, and found PDF995 suited me best – I guess it comes down to personal preference in the end.
