Do you run the free version of Malwarebytes 5 and have the automatic check for updates disabled?

THIS TOPIC IS NOT ABOUT WHY THE AUTO UPDATES FEATURE OF MALWAREBYTES IS DISABLED, so please, no comments about “Why is the auto update disabled, it shouldn’t ever be”. That question can be debated in another topic aside from this one.

If you have the auto-update feature for platform/program updates disabled and you (for whatever reason) manually check for program and definition updates, read on.

Some of you (or many of you) might already know about this workaround, so this post is aimed at those who might be wondering “Why do I only get definition updates when I check for updates and never get any program updates?”

IF you install the Free version and just click Settings>General>”Check for updates” button (OR you click the little avatar of a person’s head in the upper right corner of the window and then select “About Malwarebytes” and click the “Check for updates” button on that screen), you’ll very probably get the latest definition update and it will be quickly installed. But that’s all you’ll probably get. Although that procedure by itself is a great way to get you definition files updated to the latest ones, it won’t keep your program platform updated.

So, next time you click the “Check for updates” button, let it download and install the latest definition updates, and then stay on that screen for at least another three minutes or just a bit longer but DO NOT click the “Check for updates” button again until at least three minutes have elapsed.

Once at least three minutes have elapsed, go ahead and click that “Check for updates” button and this time you might very well see it download another update and then automatically restart Malwarebytes. If that happens, it means that the updater has downloaded (and is installing) a platform or program update to apply to your installation.

As of this writing, the latest version of Malwarebytes (both Paid and Free) is 5.2.11.183 with component package version 131.0.5227. The info for Malwarebytes 5 latest releases can be found on the following page on Malwarebytes’ support forums:

    https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/308492-malwarebytes-5/page/2/

The link may change slightly if they add another page to the topic about the latest Malwarebytes releases in version 5. That topic is closed to any posters aside from their employees or moderators, but IS kept updated with the latest release announcements, usually coming every two or three weeks, but sometimes more frequently.

I hope this helps some folks a bit with keeping their copy of Malwarebytes not only updated with the latest definitions but also updated with the latest platform and program updates.

Just to add to the original post, while following the procedure described by updating the definitions and then waiting three minutes before clicking the “Check for updates” button again, I have gotten two definition updates in a row once in a great while.

When that has happened, I have again waited three minutes after the second set of definition updates were applied and then clicked “Check for updates” a third time and then the program or platform update was downloaded. Luckily this has been pretty rare.
