• Malwarebytes Credit Card Error

Anyone else had this problem? Tried to buy Malwarebytes Prem. Got red print screen that had “credit card error, card not charged, try later or use another card.” 2 seconds later got text from bank fraud dept asking ok reply yes, fraud reply no. Called fraud dept and they said did not go through probably because sometimes the origin is from someplace like Hong Kong where a lot of fraud originates. Called card processor and they no help. Called Malwarebytes and they said their processor does credit card for lots of companies and that I had to authorize the charge with the text for it to go through.

So here is the quandary. If Malware says card not charged and after that I text ok then how do I know it was accepted or if I go back and resubmit whole thing will I be charged twice. If I text No then that processor will never work again and might cause my card to be locked.

Why is a PC security company, Malwarebytes, using a payment processor that the bank is suspicious of? Kind of ironic!

I have never had this problem with my card, including Woody Plus that I just paid a few days ago and which transaction went through smoothly with no problems.

The bottom line, although I like the Malware product, having to go through such a dubious payment system is just not worth it.

Also note that the credit card payment for Malwarebytes Premium by default autorenews after the period of time for which you set it up!  [See in part Section 6 Automatic Renewals of the Terms and Conditions for the payment processor “2Checkout”]  You have to go through some hoops in your account to change this setting to NOT autorenew.
And if I remember correctly, a second or subsequent manual payment causes the autorenew setting to be turned on again!
One phrase for this is “sharp practice”; others may be censored…

Plethora means a lot to me.

Especially the turning on again – is that not just disgusting!

Also when I have to use a credit card I like to go back into the site after the payment clears and remove my credit card, which most sites like Woody will let you do. (Why leave a credit card on anybody’s site with risk of that site being hacked nowadays?) But guess what? Best Buy’s retail site will but the Geek Squad division will not. I sent a dozen emails to Geek Squad to remove my credit card even though I did turn off auto renew and all I could get was, “We do not have a way to do that”.

And then there is also AT&T and Comcast that bills you an extra $10/month if you will NOT sign up for autopay and e-stmts (not everyone has a PC to get e-stmts or a credit card).

Corporate America (or at least some companies) have lost all sense of what is honest and dishonest.

      Hi J9438:

When I purchased my lifetime / perpetual Malwarebytes Premium licenses in July 2009 they were using Cleverbridge to handle their online payment transactions (note that Malwarebytes stopped selling these lifetime licenses in March 2014). I have no idea how Malwarebyte’s online payments are handled now but https://www.malwarebytes.com/pricing notes they use “Secure check-out with PCI DSS compliant billing process“.

Based on my personal experience I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that your payment was blocked by your credit card company because every purchase from Malwarebytes over a certain dollar amount automatically triggers a potential fraud alert. I purchased a Dell laptop online a few years ago and received a confirmation number showing that my credit card payment had been approved, but a week later when I was trying to track my shipment I discovered that VISA had stopped the payment to Dell (who then refused to ship my new laptop) just because Dell is often targeted by fraudsters who try purchase computers with stolen credit card numbers. Dell told me this happens to them all the time but that there was nothing they could do from their end, and I had to phone VISA and answer all sorts of security questions just to convince them that my credit card number had not been stolen and that the charge by Dell was legitimate.

In my case the bank rep seemed to think it was because the “origin” of the payment was from China where they get lots of fraud transactions and my amount was minimal.

VISA had stopped the payment to Dell

That certainly was a painful situation to go through!!

Ok, Woody, why won’t you let me delete it? It says it is linked to an automatic renewal. So how do I delete the automatic renewal?

I have a monthly subscription that was linked to a credit card and worked fine for a couple of years and then one day it didn’t. I worked with the subscription vendor and the credit card bank for a couple of months trying to fix the problem. The vendor wasn’t having any problems  with other accounts that used credit cards from that same bank. The bank couldn’t pinpoint why the transactions from this vendor and my card were failing. Meanwhile all the other transactions on the same credit card were working fine. I ended up having to switch that vendor to a different card.

Same with mine. No other problems with the card. It was my bank’s fraud department system that flagged the transaction and apparently the particular vendor met the requirements for possible fraud either because of country of origin of the transaction or maybe the bank had other fraud problems from that vendor (maybe not even their fault – just someone trying to hack them).
