While helping a Lounge member in this thread, I wanted to lookup the Manage Wireless Profile tool that had been available in previous versions of Windows. I found that it is no longer supported in Windows 8. That’s a shame because for a mobile worker it is sometimes useful to be able to manage the networks on the go.

In the CP and RP versions of Win8, there were a couple of work-arounds published that included making a call to explorer.exe shell:::{1fa9085f-25a2-489b-85d4-86326eedcd87}, but this no longer works in the production release – specifically in the RTM.

So, after a bit of Googling around I found a nice little 3rd party app here. It lists all stored wifi profiles and allows you to manage them, setting priorities, viewing the key, checking wifi encryption, enabling, disabling, exporting etc.

The existing Metro Connect to a Network App only lists and manages those networks it can currently see, not those that have been used previously and remembered. This 3rd party app could be a useful little extra for mobile techies as well as those who need to swap around or otherwise manage their wifi networks.

As with all 3rd party tools, use at your own risk…but it appears clean to me.

Beware, I downloaded and installed this application and it trashed my browser by installing automatically unwanted addons. As a result the browser crashed when I tried to look at any page. Only out was to do a system restore.

Jim, what browser add-ons did you see? …. I’ve gone back to look and I have no additional browser add-ons installed by the tool.

One of the download links on that page takes you to Softpedia, which may have sponsored download managers – perhaps that was a route in for for the add-ons?.

The direct link for the download is http://www.thewindowsclub.com/downloads/WFPM8.zip

Unfortunately many of the specialized download sites, Softpedia, CNet, etc. have lots of download buttons. It’s sometimes hard to determine which is the correct download link for the app you want. Often the wrong download button is bigger and more prominent in the display. You also have to be really careful you opt out of any extra little apps that tag along.

Ad Hoc Wireless Networking (peer to peer or machine to machine) has not been supported natively in Windows 8 since the RP. I use wired connections so that my laptops can communicate with each other, but do not get Internet or other devices interfering with those communications. Crossover Ethernet works just fine. And Windows XP Pro SP3 computers can join a Windows 8 Pro Homegroup, so you don’t have to support a Workgroup for the XP machines. Just don’t enable password protection on the Homegroup if you are using PIN or Picture logins in Win 8. These login types are not supported in Windows XP and will cause an error message on the XP side.

Thanks for the third-party App link. It’s nice to have a good workaround available.
