Regarding your doubts, the Startpage web site does say:

“You can’t beat Google when it comes to online search. So we’re paying them to use their brilliant search results in order to remove all trackers and logs.”

If true, your reservations about ripping Google off are unfounded.

It would appear to be true, according to Why does Google let Startpage access their search results?

Startpage.com has a contract with Google that allows us to use their official “Syndicated Web Search” feed, so we have to pay them to get those results. Sometimes we get slightly different results, but in general, they are the same high quality.

        From another support page:

We earn 99 procent of the money from the ads we show on our results pages. While serving non-personal ads is less profitable than serving ads based on tracking customers’ search history and personal interests, we feel it is a far more ethical model on which to build a company.

As a private company, registered in Europe (NL), they have other products – StartMail, and proxy for search results. SmartMail will be adding to their income base, with annual fees.

The “General Ads” are probably using Google’s AdSense as their platform. That means there is no “Google ripoff” whatsoever. I’m surprised an experienced tech writer didn’t remember that this is the most widely used “generic” ad platform out there.

I’ve quite happily used the Startpage search service for a good while (NL Based) as well as Quant more recently (FR based), primarily due to GDPR compliance (without any accounts). Have no issues with either and no axe to grind with others, it’s called ‘freedom of choice’.

A helpful website I came across last year has tested, researched and blogged about privacy orientated search engines (as well as other computer privacy things) that some may find enlightening.

As for powersaving, I usually create my own within
      power optionscreate a powerplan,
one powerplan for when the laptop is plugged in (with the battery removed once charged) and another powersaving powerplan for on the go.

Our desktop when in use  – no powersaving YMMV 😛

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

The original Ixquick was based in Denmark, which is outside of the EU. But NL is definitely inside the EU. Very similar privacy laws in any event.

Um, Denmark is in the EU. It’s not in the Eurozone (still has DKK as its currency).

Eliminate spare time: start programming PowerShell

With regard to “powercfg /energy,” I ran this twice under elevated command prompt and was unable to open the report both times. I am on Win7 x64 using Chrome 76. Result was:

“Your file was not found It may have been moved or deleted.
      ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND”

I tried opening the file with IE11 and got:

      “This page can’t be displayed

•Make sure the web address is correct.
•Look for the page with your search engine.
•Refresh the page in a few minutes.

      Fix connection problems”

      Any ideas?

Running as admin may set permissions / save the file so ordinary users can’t see it.
Try running it with a named output file to a directory that already exists.
        e.g. powercfg /report /output “C:\temp\myreport.html”

        cheers, Paul
