What a strange month. Two sky-is-falling security holes with unconscionable “Microsoft warns meeeeeeelions of Windows users that they’re vulnerable” h

AskWoody_MVPMarch 24, 2020 at 2:26 pm #2210589Then, on Thursday, we saw another cumulative update for Win10 versions 1903 and 1909. KB 4551762 patches the SMBv3 security hole and, being a cumulative update, includes all earlier patches. The rush was on to install the patch-of-a-patch,
Why do you refer to KB4551762 as “patch-of-a-patch”?
Because it’s a cumulative update, like most updates?

GuestMarch 25, 2020 at 2:42 am #2210714I like MS-DEFCON system. However, my issue with it (disclaimer: Group B here) is this:
No matter how many weeks you wait, Patch Tuesday updates remain the same (of course, unless MS releases an OOB update to fix them, but it doesn’t happen as often as the hold and wait until MS-DEFCON goes “ok”.) So, I rather wait 2 weeks, and patch (except when there is a critical fix that IMO could affect me; then, at most, I wait a week.)1 user thanked author for this post.

GuestMarch 25, 2020 at 1:45 pm #2210836I believe you have successfully restated the MS-DEFCON rating system in your own words. The wait period is not just about expecting a new fix from the publisher. It is also about allowing more information to come in from affected users and system admins, the test base. That information may indicate serious concern, or frequently illustrates actual flaws are less significant than the initial, cautious concern suggested.
This can only be determined in hindsight, with the support of facts. That is the real reason to delay. If Microsoft also happens to repair in that time, so much the better for us. For those who trust Microsoft implicitly, the delay is not necessary at all.

GuestMarch 26, 2020 at 4:52 pm #2211248I am running Win 7 SP2 X64 on an HP G62 laptop. On Wednesday the 25th i got updates on Windows Update from Intel and Realtek. the entries read as follows:
Intel-Other hardware-Intel(R) Management Interfaceย ย ย 64kb
Realtek Semiconductor Corp – Network-Realtek RTL8191SE 802.11b/g/nย Wifi Adapterย ย 520kb
I tried to install the updates, and all went well until the end. Windows update gave me the notice that the install Failed. with an error code of 80070103. When i clicked on the highlighted “Get help with this error” all I got was a blank page.ย I tried it a 2nd time with the same results. The windows Update Log shows that both updates failed twice.
I’m wondering what these updates were about and if i really need them.
Thank you, in advance, for any and all help or advice you may offer.
Dave

ManagerMarch 26, 2020 at 4:56 pm #2211254We do not recommend installing drivers for hardware that are supplied by Microsoft through Windows Update. Too many times they cause problems. If everything is working OK, I wouldn’t try to install any drivers from Windows Update.
If you need to update your drivers, go to the computer OEM (first choice) or the device manufacturer (second choice) and download the updated drivers for your specific device.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 27, 2020 at 4:55 am #2211366Boss, sorry I got impatient on post #2211248 above. I forgot to log in before making the post. The anonymous poster is me.
After making that post I checked back on Windows Update and the updates listed above were gone. “No new updates available”. Late last night there was another Update available for .NET Framework. It disappeared in about 30 seconds (before I could wright it down). This morning I’m showing “No new updates available” again. Is Microsoft just throwing updates out there at random and removing them at will??? Frustrating, to say the least.
I guess I’ll just wait and see what happens over the next 2 weeks. I’m thinking about installing 0patch and let that one take care of needed updates. Any thoughts about that being a good idea or not?
As usual, THANK YOU, in advance, for any and all help or advice.Dave
