When I try to change one page in a word document from portrait to landscape (using section breaks), Word will not let me. I get the following message: “Setting you chose for the left and right margins, column spacing, or paragraph indents are too large for the page width in some sections.” If I try adjusting the indents, I still get the same message. Does anyone know of a way to override this ‘block’ and make Word do what you want it to, even if it doesn’t think it’s a good idea?

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 6, 2003 at 2:32 am #710889I’m not sure how you’re trying to do this. If you select the portion that you want to be landscape, you should be able to go to File/Page Setup…/Paper size/Landscape. Make sure that the apply to box says “Selected text”. Or, if your cursor is within two NEXT PAGE section breaks, make sure the apply to box says “this section”. You can’t make a section landscape if the section breaks are continuous because you can’t have a portion of the page landscape & part portrait.
Hope this helps, -

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 6, 2003 at 4:47 am #710942Thanks, I tried using next page breaks, and did indeed select ‘this section only’, or selected text. For some reason, Word refusing to cooperate. The only solution I’ve managed to come up with is to replace ALL section breaks with page breaks (global replace). I’m then able to adjust margins, but my formatting is a total mess, with page bleed, lost headers, etc. Trying to avoid all that. Much obliged for your suggestion, though, which ordinarily should have worked.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 6, 2003 at 5:25 am #710968Sorry that didn’t help. It sounds like you have some document corruption. If so, just replacing section breaks with page breaks may not correct the corruption. If I were you, I’d open a blank document. Copy & paste all the text up to but NOT including the section break. Then insert a new section break in the new document. Continue copying & pasting your text without including the section breaks or last paragraph mark in the original document. When a document corrupts, the corruption often lies in the last paragraph mark or in a section break.
