• Menu & Toolbar Icons Don’t Work

I have been replacing some of our 200 MHz computers with 500 MHz ones and upgrading memory to 128 MB. I’ve been installing fresh copies of Windows 98 2nd Edition and all software including Office 97. It has gone smoothly, except that a couple of people have complained that the menu items and standard toolbar icons in Word often quit functioning. They can open up another program, then return to Word and the items will work again for a while. One girl has complained that the “-” and “X” in the upper right corner of her screen have totally stopped functioning in Word. She doesn’t have the menu and toolbar problem however, so I don’t know if her problem is related or not. I have never run across this before and cannot find any references to it in Microsoft’s Knowledge Base. Any suggestions?

The second problem (no – or X) sounds like she’s using Word 2000. Any chance?

As for problem 1, see http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm%5B/url%5D.

The problem described on the webpage you listed isn’t exactly the same, but I tried it way. It didn’t work.

As to the 2nd problem, I haven’t checked yet to see what version of Word she’s using. If she’s using 2000, she brought it in and installed it herself! I don’t think that’s the case.

        Any other suggestions to try?
