I’m helping someone with Office 2000. We are merging address labels from an Excel file. We need to select records using the Query, but there is no “contains” choice. Any idea how to add “contains” to the list of comparison options? TIA, J

AskWoody LoungerAugust 13, 2004 at 2:23 pm #864039post 128577 has information on the different options when merging from an Excel datasource. If your datasource is the first spreadsheet in the Excel file, then select the DDE method of merging. In the mailmerge helper dialog box, you’ll see an Query Options button & you can use that to make your query.
Hope this helps, -

AskWoody PlusAugust 13, 2004 at 4:19 pm #864106Thanks, but I guess my question wasn’t clear enough. I am able to link the single page spreadsheet for the merge using Tools, Mail Merge. Where I run into trouble is the Query Options. There are multiple single letter codes in a field and I want to select the records based on “Contains” “A,” . But the problem is the only choices in the comparison column are Equal to, not equal to, Less than, Greater than, ,,,is blank, is not blank. There is no comparison choice for “Contains”. If I use equal to A, that works for records with only one code. But there are codes like A,M,T, So the only way I can think of to best select records is if I could choose CONTAINS A,. So I’m looking for a way to add “Contains” to the Comparison choices. Thanks again, J

AskWoody PlusAugust 13, 2004 at 7:36 pm #864305Thanks Phil I followed along the steps for MSQuery and was able to use the Query Wizard to filter the data specifying Contains A, but when I get to the last step which has a radio button selected as “Return Data to MS Word” and click the Finish Button, I get a message: “Word was unable to open the data source.” When I choose the other radio button which is View Data or Edit Query in MS Query and click the Finish button, I see a table with the correctly filtered records, but the only place from there that I could see to get it to merge with word was a choice under the file menu, “Return Data to MS Word” I get the same message: “Word was unable to open the data source.” Thanks again, J
