This area gives me a lot of valuable tips, solutions and interesting points. However, with all of this information, there seem to be problem solutions I’ve missed or that have not been addressed.

First off, I continue to have a Windows 95 placard come up on some shortcuts stating that, for example:

“The DECAPI.DLL file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6883.

One program explanation said that the missing export file may have been removed during an uninstall procedure. Frankly, I uninstall programs so often that this comment is of little help. Besides, I don’t know where to go for a copy of the file.

All my searches that I can think of in MS Knowledge base have yielded nothing as to where this export file could be found. (Aside, search keywords there are sometimes esoteric on specific searches.)

Secondly, with Win95, IE 5.00 (upgraded to IE 5.01), a 486-66 MHz computer with no previous problems, my MS Outlet Express now provides a fatal error on start-up forcing me to move to my Outlook 2000 mail program. (I have not upgraded my MS Office 2000 with either of the Service Packs.)

Maybe someone can address these problems because I think there must be other people with similar problems.

You can check out ftpsearch to see if they have a copy of the file you’re looking for.

Use a text editor to open DECAPI.DLL and remove the line referencing MFC42.DLL, it (may) be line 6883. Be sure to back it up first in case anything goes wrong.

if you’re having problems with outlook 5.01, revert to 5.0 to see if that solves the problem. The difference in the two products is minimal. You may also be able to install Outlook 5.0 while running IE 5.01… I havn’t tried, but i’m sure there’s a way.

First, I strongly agree with Ian, you should NEVER try to edit a DLL, and, even if you were able to edit it, you would probably just crash your computer, or worse.

About your error: Decapi.dll appears to be used by Quicken, if you have Quicken, you may want to check for updates or problems. That said, most MFC42.DLL errors result from an old version of the DLL being on your system.

The first step is to do a file find for MFC42.DLL, and see how many different copies you have. In an ideal system, the newest version will be in C:WindowsSystem. A lot of programs install there own copy in either their program folder, or in Windows System, you really only want one copy, and you want the newest.

So, after the file find, right click each, and select properties, and check the version numbers. Making note of each. Once you find the newest, and after recording your current locations, copy the newest to c:windowssystem. Then, right click all the others, and rename them to something like mfc42.bak. Restart, and see what errors continue.

First, there are no copies of MFC42.DLL on my computer. Second, I have located a copy of the MFC42.DLL file on a computer running Win 98SE. I have Win 95B. Will the MFC42.DLL file from the Win 98SE computer work on my Win 95B computer without creating problems?

Mfc42.dll must be on the system somewhere, most programs, including windows require it. Can you try the find again?

With your mouse, Goto
Start->Find->Files or Folders
Named: XXX
Look In: Local Hard Drives (or in C:, if you have only one drive)
Make sure include subfolders is checked
Click Find Now

Also, mfc42.dll is backwards compatible, so the win98se version should run ok, just put it in c:windowssystem

It is a quicken problem, checkout the following link http://www.intuit.com/support/quicken/faqs/win3/5141.html. Personally I don’t like playing with .dlls, so I think you should uninstall Quicken, and if you need it, re-install it.
