Microsoft accidentally revealed a UI design prototype for the next version of Windows at Ignite 2022

An early UI exploration prototype for the next version of Windows?!

Microsoft is hard at work on the next version of Windows, which is commonly referred to as “Next Valley” internally. I had reported in July that Microsoft was returning to a three-year development cycle for the next major version of Windows, with the next client release currently scheduled for some time in 2024.

I didn’t expect to be writing about the next version of Windows again so soon, but a handful of viewers watching the Ignite Keynote yesterday noticed an updated version of the Windows UI that was shown in a brief cutaway, which had a floating taskbar along the bottom, system icons in the top right, a floating search box in the top middle, and the weather in the top left

This reminds me of the comment made by Patrick Hutber, a British financial journalist, some way back into the last century:

      Improvement means deterioration.

      BATcher

Plethora means a lot to me.

Looks like change for the sake of change, The bottom task bar and upper right system icons look a lot like macOS. But really, what’s the point? Does it improve patching and updating by giving the user more control; are the patches/updates more reliable, etc.?

It has been change for the sake of change since Windows Vista. I really feel like Windows 2000 or maybe XP were the last releases that really innovated.

It would never happen of course, but my vision would have been to leave the XP UI largely unchanged and build on that with newer technologies.

Wonder what useful functionality has been withdrawn from that GUI?

Looks more like something from the Zorin Linux GUI..
The MSFT GUI has always sucked since Windows 7.

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

To my eyes, the most beautiful Windows GUI that Microsoft has put out is the one for Windows Vista, followed closely by Windows 7. This is largely due to the Aero Glass effects that they have gotten away from beginning with Windows 8.

The most attractive window control buttons (again, IMHO) are those from certain versions of the never-released Windows Longhorn, which eventually led to Vista. Here’s an example of what I mean.

Vista was a step in the right direction for the GUI IMO, preserving the MSFT interface with a CHOICE of the classic GUI in (earlier XP) Vista and 7. Dropping the choice thereafter meant the rise of 3rd party GUI substitutes (which are far superior over the default 8-10 phone-style/ tile and mac-lin-esque 11 guff)
        As ever YOMV 🙂

MS is keeping its employees busy with busy work on GUI changes since they are not able to do anything else.

I agree Windows Xp was the last great OS that MS made with people that have brain cells. Current MS employees have little to no brain cells since they are on a trip if you know what I mean.
